About Valence

Including tips for the best time to visit Valence

Perched on the banks of the Rhône River, the French city of Valence is renowned for its picturesque green spaces, Mediterranean climate and medieval landmarks. The city's most historical buildings are perhaps the 16th-century Valence Cathedral or the Collégiale Saint-Barnard dating back to the 1100s.

Across Valence, you'll find a selection of monuments and art installations, most notably the 57-metre Château d'Eau – one of France's best examples of modern art, located in the Parc de Jean-Perdrix. Other notable landmarks include the Maison des Têtes archaeological site or the Musée de Valence, where you can see works by Camille Corot, Hyacinthe Rigaud and Gerard van Honthorst.

Surrounding Valence, there are many cycle routes taking you to nearby villages and landmarks like Park Jouvet and the Maison Troglodytes, while further afield, you'll find the ski resorts of the French Alps. If you're looking to stay in the city, explore the nooks and crannies of Place des Clercs – the main tourist hub in Valence and a vibrant area dotted with restaurants, bars and a variety of shops.

While the closest city to Valence is Marseille, many regional transport links are available for people travelling from Paris. Additionally, Valence's location on the Veloroute also makes it a popular stop-off point for cyclists heading to the south of France or nearby Crest.

We loved the proximity of the hotel to the old part of town.

We loved the proximity of the hotel to the old part of town. There was convenient parking which led 1) to Penny Kenny's Irish pub (v. friendly) which was across from a magnificent city park, complete with a grand gazebo; then 2) loads of beautiful shops; then 3) many sweet little narrow streets with cafés, atmosphere of genuine conviviality and terrace drinking. What a friendly town. All so close to the Novotel Valence Sud, where we stayed.

Valence is a lovely place to come and stay for a few days or a few weeks. The town has lots of great restaurants and the cafe scene is quite good. I did find the number of SDF people so homeless quite alarming. They were harmless but there were a lot. As soon as it gets dark, they don't seem to hang around. Valence is a great staging point for the Vercors mountains and as a stay over into the Ardeche. We come to Valence regularly and really like it. There are some great little artisan places particularly along the Rue Des Alpes just going out of town. Try the Vallon bakery and the Epicurieux coffee and beer place...just amazing.

A great stopover if you are travelling south and some wonderful restaurants:Andre at Pic is superb, so was Bistro le Clerc. And we had great salads at Cafe du Marche. A lovely place to stroll around with a beautiful Romanesque cathedral, squares with pavement cafes and narrow streets in the old town.

Valence is a good sized town and perfect for a weekend.

Valence is a good sized town and perfect for a weekend. Easy to get around on foot. Plenty to see and enjoy e.g local museum with a roof terrace for river and town views and charming squares for coffee and dining. Favourite lunch spot was 'Chez Grandma' - stunning food in a sunny square lined with Plane trees.
