About Newcastle upon Tyne

Including tips for the best time to visit Newcastle upon Tyne

Newcastle upon Tyne, or simply Newcastle – one of the largest cities in northeast England – is a thriving port city with notable culture and nightlife scenes. From its Victorian city centre to Northumbria University and rejuvenated quayside, there's a lot to explore in this ever-evolving metropolis.

You won't have much difficulty finding things to do in Newcastle. First opened in 1837, the historic Theatre Royal and its Edwardian interior is an atmospheric spot to watch pantomime, drama, opera and other performances. For a look at the city's industrial past, stop by the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art to see exhibitions housed inside a converted mill. Or, root on Newcastle United during a football match at St James' Park.

London may have its chic Soho nightclubs, but Newcastle's nightlife scene is equally renowned. With a major university in town, young party-loving crowds are a popular sight after dark – and there are multiple options for revelry. You'll find a high concentration of bars, clubs and restaurants in Bigg Market and Quayside. Alternatively, slip into Sage Gateshead to listen to electronic, rock, hip hop and other musical acts.

Direct train routes between Newcastle Train Station and London King's Cross mean city-goers can reach the former in under three hours. While in the city, the speedy and affordable Tyne & Wear Metro makes travelling between attractions a breeze.

Lots of shops and eating places. Theatre Royal was excellent. Great museums and churches. Lovely walk along river side and recommend trip to top of Baltic Centre for great views and to see nesting Kittiwakes close up.

There is so much to do/see in a very compact city. Lovely bars, restaurants and shopping. Lots of history, and easily walkable. The Metro is easy, clean and a joy compared to the London Underground! Loved the Food Market at the Quayside on a Sunday morning - go hungry! there is so much to choose from. The Baltic Centre is fabulous and well worth a visit. The Sage centre is amazing, worth checking whats on before you go. We listened to a rehersal at St Nicholas' church -- just fab! And they do Cathedral Comedy there - worthing checking out. Fav bit though, jump on the Metro and go to Tynemouth for Saturday morning market. It is choc full of the weird and wonderful! Walk by the sea and have Fish & Chips at one of the many restaurants!

I stayed at the Caledonian hotel Jesmond with family and friends for my daughters wedding at Wylam Brewery. This was a perfect base for us. We used taxis because no city centre or district has a perfect way to get around. Blue line Taxis were excellent

Great city with friendly people.

Great city with friendly people. We had a great time exploring the city centre and if you’re driving it isn’t bad to explore further such as the angel of the north and shopping centres if that’s your thing.

A good sized room that apparently has recently been refurbished. Good Wi-Fi connections. Good car parking facilities. Also a very good indoor heated pool. The decor is relatively dated, but the hotel has been well maintained. It also has extensive grounds and really available car parking facilities. I would most definitely recommend this as a hotel to stay in. Good value for money. Would stay again.
