About Capri

Including tips for the best time to visit Capri

Capri, with its rugged cliffs rising out of the Bay of Naples, is one of the hotspots of Italian tourism.

There’s just as much to do on the island of Capri as there is around it. Stroll through the iconic Piazzetta di Capri to indulge in a bit of retail therapy at its upscale shops or grab a seat at one of its many outdoor cafés to enjoy people watching and celebrity spotting. You can also embark on a boat tour of the island, taking in views of the magnificent Il Faraglioni rock formations jutting out of the sea or stopping at famous attractions such as the Blue Grotto. Set aside some time to visit Marina Piccola too – it has a sunny beach with views of Il Faraglioni.

Capri draws on its rich cultural and historical heritage to attract visitors from across the globe. Hike up to Villa Jovis, where you can explore the remains of two ancient villas belonging to the Roman emperor, Tiberius. Closer to the centre of the city, you’ll find Church Santo Stefano that has an impressive baroque architecture, or head to Villa San Michele (Axel Munthe House) to see a sizable art and artefacts collection.

No trip to Capri is complete without a sampling of its fine cuisine. Pasta and seafood dishes as well as limoncello (lemon liqueur) are the highlights of the island’s cuisine. Caprese salad, stuffed zucchini blossoms and torta caprese (chocolate and almond cake) are some other items to try here.

Capri is great to explore via taxi, get up early and head up to Ana Capri, less traffic more intimate area. The chair lift is a must to the top of the mountain, and lunch up top of the mountain is amazing. Capri is nice in the evenings to walk around and shop with plenty of places to get cocktails, and explore.

The center of Capri is mostly shopping.

The center of Capri is mostly shopping. We went for a long walk. We enjoyed areas of the island away from the center of town. As soon as we walked away from the tourist shopping, we had the place to ourselves. We saw almost no one. That was a pleasant surprise. We also took the bus to Anacapri. I liked Anacapri better than Capri. Anacapri felt a little more authentic than Capri. I am glad I went to Capri but I don't feel a need to go again.

I would suggest to friends doing day trips, reason being it was expensive as expected, accommodation is a huge cost on top of dining, souvenirs etc. to me, ferry’s each day is better value if you want to spend a couple of days.

So glad we decided to grab 3 nights in Capri vs.

July 1, 2025

So glad we decided to grab 3 nights in Capri vs. our original 2 nights. Honestly could have easily stayed a week. First the isle is amazingly beautiful. Yes it gets crowded during the day in the main touristy spots but early AM or later PM it was charming. People were super nice. The isle rewards those who go a bit off the beaten path. Grab good pair of walking shoes and explore! We had fantastic meals at Lo Sfizio, La Palette Ristorante, both in our neighborhood, and Ristorante Isidoro. Don't forget a good sandwich at Cuccurullo Aldo deli too.

What a special place.

June 24, 2025

What a special place. Stunning views everywhere with several restaurant options. We enjoyed walking around, but be prepared for several very high end stores making shopping for a wallet like mine very hard. We took a boat tour which was sadly cut short due to strong winds, but we still enjoyed it. The Marina gets super busy when people come to Capri from cruise ships. Be prepared to give yourself time to ride the Funicular up or down because the lines get very long. Stunning island.

Capri is a constant set of stairs.

June 10, 2025

Capri is a constant set of stairs. This location was just right....had to go up 85 steps to get to the central area of town but that was ok. Cats, birds and lots of voices on the walk. Felt sorry for the day trippers....there is no way they can get a feel for the island.
