About Cefalù

Including tips for the best time to visit Cefalù

Oscar-winning film 'Cinema Paradiso' immortalised the small-town charms of Cefalù, a coastal village in northeast Sicily. Although the area's once-quiet allure has long been replaced by heavy resort crowds, there's still plenty of beauty and leisurely pleasures to be found in its medieval-era architecture, craggy coastline and picturesque beach.

Cefalù Cathedral tops the list of Cefalù's must-see attractions. Built by a Norman king, the church features 12th-century Romanesque architecture, a column-supported nave and some of Italy's most well-preserved mosaics on both its exterior and interior. A more unique remnant of Cefalù's past can be found at the Lavatoio. Reached via a winding stone staircase, this tiered collection of wash basins was once used by women during the Middle Ages to wash and bathe.

The beauty of Cefalù isn't lost on its steady influx of visitors, who come to hike the scenic coast and cool off at the main beach – considered one of Sicily's best. The half-moon-shaped stretch of sand is sandwiched by a promenade and the glittering Mediterranean Sea, where more adventurous types take to sailing and snorkelling. Alternatively, hikes up to La Rocca – a rocky outcrop home to megalithic and medieval ruins – will reward you with panoramic views of land and sea.

The best way to get an overview of Cefalù is by taking a walk through its medieval town centre, whose streets are closed to cars. Corso Ruggero, the main strip, is lined with restaurants and shops and provides great opportunities for sightseeing and people-watching.

Cefalu was a pleasant surprise to our 3 weeks in Italy/Sicily. We just picked it as a stay mostly for it's location as we traveled around Sicily, but found it to be one of our most favorite towns. We LOVED our apartment with a great balcony to sit on and watch the street happenings below us. The location was only a few steps from the main Piazza Duomo and lots of restaurants in the area.

To be honest we only ventured out of Hotel Kalura to go into Cefalú itself a couple of times, once for a nice dinner in town, once in daytime to look around. Cefalú central has an old town, with tourist shops but mostly quite subtle. There's a golden beach [no shade] right by the town. There are some interesting old buildings but by this time (two weeks in Sicily) we had seen so many marvels we were really just interested in sun and sea.

Cefalu is easy to find your way around in, it's not very big but it has all you need - including a beach in the city center! Weather in October was just perfect, water still warm enough for swimming and water sports. You can see the whole town from above if you climb the Rocca, all very well organized. Lovely restaurants with great local food too.

Great, historical town.

Great, historical town. We went in Oct and it was hot and busy. Mid summer might have been too much. See the cathedral, climb the hill behind, swim on a perfect beach. It's small enough to walk everywhere and plenty of restaurant choices. We liked Triscele.

Nice pretty town with lots of history and character, good food. Friendly service. BUT DO NOT STAY IN CLUB MED as you don’t get the service you’ve paid (a lot) for. Our B&B in town was great by contrast.

Cefalu is a stunning seaside resort surrounded by hills dotted with homes here and there.Gorgeous beaches,La Duomo Cathedral with lovely square outside.Plenty bars, restaurants in the many lovely alleys where you can wander and take in the sights and there is a photo opportunity every way you turn.Lovely shops, friendly people.Easy access from airport we took train to Palermo Centrale then literally changed platforms(all on same level)for Cefalu train.Trains great and on time, you must wear the FFP2 masks on train. We also spent 3 nights in Palermo but when we next visit we have decided to stay in Cefalu and just get train into Palermo for the day,a less than 40minute journey. We did not want to leave.
