Italy's ancient capital is an architectural wonderland, with its many ruins depicting the stories of its vast empire which once spanned three continents. This open-air museum includes must-see monuments like the Roman Forum, Palatine Hill and the Colosseum. This former gladiator arena is the city's centrepiece, and conjures up dramatic images of the games once held here through its huge underground complex and multi-tiered seating. It's also worth a visit to the impeccably preserved Pantheon, which further portrays the Eternal City's golden age.
With over 900 churches and many breathtaking basilicas among them, Rome is also home to the city-state of the Vatican, the seat of the Catholic Church. St. Peter's Basilica is undoubtedly the tourism hotspot, but many treasures such as Michelangelo's Sistine Chapel and countless other masterpieces can be found inside the Vatican's captivating museums.
As with any city in Italy, the local cuisine varies from region to region. In Rome, the trademark dishes are 'cacio e pepe' – a simple but delicious pecorino cheese and pepper pasta recipe – and 'spaghetti carbonara'.
Other points of interest include the iconic Trevi Fountain, the Borghese Gallery, and the popular squares of Piazza Navona and Piazza di Spagna. When the weather is at its best between April and June, take a stroll through Villa Borghese park or hire a bike.

It was a whole different beautiful world.
18 April 2024
It was a whole different beautiful world. In 2 words- organized chaos- I loved every minute of my time in Rome! People were friendly, waitstaff were so welcoming no matter where we sat down to eat, airbnb host helped get us into apartment and to check out with taxi pickup. I want to take my girls back with me. Next time I would like to check out other markets besides just Campo di Fiori

If you are catholic, go to holy mass at the Pantheon on Sunday at 10.30 am, free access and no long queues. Masses of tourists at the Vatican Museum. Next time I am going in the winter to have another look.

18 April 2024
You must always book in advance your visit to the Archaeological Park of the Colosseum - Palatine Hill - Forum Romanum because the queues are enormous and so you'll have to wait for more than two or three hours to get your tickets just outside, especially from April and beyond. We ate fine Italian food (pizza and pasta) in Pizzeria Rionale Agape (Via dei Coronari 30) near Piazza Navona and in Pizza in Trevi (Via di S. Vincenzo 30/30A) nearby the Fontana di Trevi. Finally, an excellent wine bar lies in Via Properzio 31/33 "Il Sorpasso", where local Romans meet for coffee, wine, drinks, appetizers and small dishes
I have never seen a place so crowded!
18 April 2024
I have never seen a place so crowded! (April) Surprisingly, it functions quite well. Metro is unpleasantly full, still the fastest. Buses have better coverage, less crowded but slower Staying in city center helps a lot as you can cover good area by foot. Restaurants are not too crowded. Food below expectations. We enjoyed most the restaurants in Borgo Pio near Vaticane for variety of choices. Watch for Leonardo Express. Italians may have pecular sense of humour- we boarded the train with electronic tickets (30€ for two) but got charged a 128€ penalty because the ticket booked 3 weeks earlier showed exact time of boarding being 15 minutes earlier!!! All this in the city were it is ok to drive through read light. Be careful! All in all it is a memorable experience predominantly thanks to the ancient Romans and Michelangelo.

Rome has a lot to offer, if you love your food you won’t be disappointed. There is so much history to explore and would recommend a guided tour if you can. Getting around is ok and most places are walkable too. It can be very busy in some areas and would recommend using skip the line tickets where you can to save time. Be mindful of asking how much things will cost as it can feel overpriced in some areas. It was my second visit to the city and I was pleased to be able to explore new areas and return to some familiar spots.

15 April 2024
Of course everything is so beautiful and the weather is wonderful. What I did not expect was the sheer number of people EVERYWHERE. It's so overcrowded as to almost be not worth visiting. I assumed early April would be okay but there were just masses of people everywhere. If I go again it would be in a month like February or March (well before Easter). Getting around takes some time to figure out and is not for the faint hearted!
