About Trento

Including tips for the best time to visit Trento

Set in a glacial valley just south of the Dolomite Mountains, Trento is a great jumping-off point for hiking, skiing and wine tasting. The Northern Italian city also boasts a medeival centre that’s sure to captivate visitors who are passionate about history and art.

Trento is packed with exciting things to do and see on holiday. Nestled in the valley of Monte Bondone, the Alpine Botanical Garden is home to more than 2000 species of rare high-altitude plants and even has a small nature trail. Offering sweeping mountain views, it remains one of the oldest and largest gardens in the Dolomite Alps. To learn something new, check out MUSE, a 21st-century science museum that features interactive exhibitions on the Alpine environment, sustainability, technology and more.

Trento is filled with historical landmarks, many of which you’ll find in its picturesque medieval city centre. There’s the 13th-century Buonconsiglio Castle, a stronghold that housed the prince bishops for centuries. Nowadays, the Gothic monument is home to provincial collections of art and archaeology. There’s also the 11th-century Trento Cathedral, a Romanesque building erected atop a fourth-century temple dedicated to Saint Vigilis. Inside, you’ll discover a range of medeival frescoes and a Baroque altar.

Trento is definitely a hidden gem of Italy, I think it is vastly underrated. It’s a charming city with lovely people and beautiful surroundings. If anyone tells you it’s boring, dont believe them!!! You can easily spend 4-5 days exploring the city and nature nearby

We come to Italy very often.

August 31, 2022

We come to Italy very often. And every time we passed Trento without stopping there. This time we changed our mind and it was fantastic idea. I supposed Trento would be nice, but it is incredibly beautiful and absolutely worth seeing. BUT: the weather was italian - extremely hot (around 30 degrees C at 6 PM) but the opening times are central european. The moment you want to go to the museum or shops, they are closing... And everything was a bit more expensive than in "italian" Italy (ice cream, coffee...)

A wonderful little town at the foothills of the Dolomites,...

August 8, 2022

A wonderful little town at the foothills of the Dolomites, very good looking, rather conservative but with an unexpectedly rich artistic life. When we were there, there was a Banksy exhibition at a fabulously dilapidated palazzo just south of the railway line. Facing it is the new MUSE exhibition (an air-conditioned haven on a hot day) designed by Renzo Piano. The duomo (cathedral) is dull and dark on the inside but has some wonderful features on the outside, including attached columns that have tied themselves in knots. Well worth a selfie for that alone.

July 27, 2022

Only stayed for a few hours on a beautiful early summer day with a bright sun and a cool mountain breeze. Enjoyed the old city center, classical architecture with modern touches, colourful boutiques, cosy cafes offering delicious coffee and panini, street musicians (there was a fine small quartet near the main square playing Bocelli's "con te partiro"), all under a gorgeous backdrop of the Alps. A fine city all in all. Can't wait to come back.

Nice, quiet areas close to town. Good options for cycling, walking. there is a lot to do. at the hotel there is a brochure with the opportunity to climb mountains, bike, etc in the city there is a lot to choose where to eat, drink. Nice old town with small shops. in the center shop with good glasses. From the hotel is about 10 min to grocery store.
