Borgo Trento
0.9 miles from downtown
Borgo Trento’s all about keeping it real. This is where bona-fide Veronese townsfolk go about their business, run errands and chat on street corners. It’s also home to some authentically old-school restaurants. La Quercia has been feeding locals for decades. After a hearty meal, work off the carbs with a stroll round leafy Cesare Lombroso Park.

Borgo Venezia
1.4 miles from downtown
Student central. Borgo Venezia is where the fresh-faced, the long-maned and the studious convene. Join young smoochers up at Castel San Pietro for heart-melting views. Fuel up on a cheeky “piadina” (flatbread) at Artigiana Bacchabundus before hitting the bars on Via Venti Settembre. Campus serves up cheap shots and cheesy melodies galore.

Porta Nuova
0.4 miles from downtown
A 16th-century gatehouse stands in the middle of a roundabout, greeting visitors as they arrive in town. The building casts a lonely shadow over roads, as commuters stride purposefully by. If you’re coming into Porta Nuova Station, head down tree-lined Corso Porta Nuova and gasp as Portoni della Bra’s battlements come into focus.

Città Antica

Lights, camera, action! Walking round Verona’s Old Town is like stepping into a real-life film set. The crumbling façades, mediaeval archways and implausibly good-looking people make this area seem like make-believe. Take centre stage as you barter in Piazza delle Erbe market, salute the crowds on Via Mazzini and take a bow at Verona Arena. Bravo!

Verona Fiere
1.8 miles from downtown
Verona Fiere’s “conventional”, and we mean that in a good way. It’s the scene of numerous conventions in the Veronafiere Congress Centre. Experts and anoraks alike descend on this quiet area to exhibit on themes as diverse as wine, marble and motorbikes. Beer and burger fans should check out Birreria Terzo Grado, purveyor of funky foreign brews.

San Zeno
0.7 miles from downtown
A Sunday lunch classic. During the week, peace reigns in this leafy district. Come the weekend, in come the Veronese in their hordes. Some for mass at Basilica San Zeno, others to have a family stroll or indulge in a long lunch. In fact, those in the know dine at Casa Perbellini, where haute cuisine and fine wine keep regulars coming back for more.

Verona is the home of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. The medieval Montague and Capulet families immortalized in the play actually lived here, and some of their former properties are still intact. Although there's no way to confirm if the place claiming to be Juliet's balcony was actually hers, it's still worth a visit.
Other than the setting of a tragic love story, Verona is also home to one of Italy’s best-preserved Roman amphitheatres – the Arena di Verona. Dating back to the 1st century, this open-air stadium once hosted festivals and gladiator battles. Today, it’s used exclusively for classic operas and concerts, with where stars like Adele and Paul McCartney have performed.
In Piazza delle Erbe, you’ll find more incredible architecture, like the 12th-century Torre dei Lamberti bell tower along with cozy cafes and a daily market selling produce from the Verona province. Find a quiet corner to enjoy an espresso or glass of Veneto wine, before following the Adige River to the Museo di Castelvecchio, which houses paintings, sculptures, and military weapons from the Middle Ages.
All of this is just a 30-minute train ride from the stunning Lake Garda. To get there, head to Verona Porta Nuova station and hop the train to Desenzano, then take a short bus ride to the lake.

charming city, busy, but nothing like Florence or the bigger tourist spots- though we were there in October. Amazing amphitheatre and other sites, lovely food and shops- it slightly "dines out" on the Romeo and Juliet history but is also a very romantic place due to that. Its small enough to see everything in 3 or so days.
It’s a charming city with a lot of ancient history.

Verona has a lot to see that is all in walking distance. DON'T pay to go into "Juliette's house." You can see the balcony for free from the ground and it's just an empty, old movie set. Wander the back street and eat at those restaurants, not the ones across from the Arena.
My favorite part was the visit to the Arena.
October 27, 2023
My favorite part was the visit to the Arena. The city of Verona is facinating with the modern right next to the ancient, the fanciful (Romeo and Juliet) to the historic (not Romeo and Juliet!) Verona offers is all, but does have trappings of a tourist trap. I'd recommend taking it all in with a grain of salt to savor your stay.

Start your tour by visiting Castel San Pietro by taking the Funicolare di Castel San Pietro. Overlooking the city is absolutely wonderful. We parked the car on the street of Lungadige S. Giorgio, grabbed a bite from Osteria La Ciacola Cafe Verona (tasty focaccia), and took the cable car (round trip) to go up. Tickets can be availed by a machine and there is a person who can assist, if needed. From there, cross the bridge and visit Piazza delle Erbe (souvenirs) and Juliet's balcony (Shakespeare).

Verona was nice, we thought it was a bit small, but the good thing is you can visit nearby places, like Venice and Lake Garda and termas. The weather was a bit wet during our stay, but we still made the most of it. When it wasn't raining.
