About Amman

Including tips for the best time to visit Amman

Amman is Jordan’s cultural and economic centre and a thriving global city in its own right. Renowned for its historical significance, Amman offers a chance to discover some of the world’s oldest monuments, as well as some of the best foods in the Middle East.

Of all the exciting historical monuments in the Jordan capital, perhaps the most significant is the Amman Citadel – a group of ancient buildings on one of the city’s seven hills. Here you’ll find the iconic Temple of Hercules, a relic of Roman rule across the region as well as ruins from other bygone civilisations.

Amman has plenty of museums worth checking out. The Jordan Museum located next to the City Hall outlines the country’s epic history, from its very first settlers to its contemporary achievements. Elsewhere, car fans will love the Royal Automobile Museum, which boasts a collection of more than 70 classic cars and motorcycles from the personal collection of King Hussein.

Amman is packed with delicious culinary options that are sure to satisfy all cravings. For authentic Jordanian food you can’t miss Hashem, a simple bistro located in the city’s bustling centre that serves some of the best falafel in the country. Fine diners should check out Fakhr el-Din, an award-winning Lebanese restaurant serving some of Amman’s best mezze.

It was a beautiful city.

23 March 2024

It was a beautiful city. The procedures were smooth and comfortable. The architectural style of the city was modern and beautiful. The level of food was good and the prices were between medium and high. In terms of the cleanliness of the city, it was very good. There was crowding at times.

Lack of recognizable food chains posed challenging food-searches but overall situation can be manageable. Traffic can be considered an issue and driving in Amman might be tricky (stick to uber / careem apps).

Amman is a great place to stay for a few days, even for someone like me who doesn't particularly enjoy city stays. Super easy to get around by walking, or by taxi (you can use the careem app or Uber), and many local buses go within Amman as well as buses to take you to other cities in the country. Options for local food are great for budget travelers (you can spend as little as 1 JD to get a good sandwich). I loved exploring the different neighborhoods around as well as the downtown area. Make sure to check out Hashem for its famous falafel and hummus. If you like Turkish bath houses, the Al-Pacha one was amazing and I would recommend it! The locals in the city are super friendly and helpful and not as pushy to sell you things or trying to take advantage of you which is also amazing.

A very authentic experience.

28 December 2023

A very authentic experience. This was the first Arabic city I ever visited and I loved it. The landscape has a lot of hills so you should wear comfortable shoes and be ready to go up and down all the time. Locals are very friendly and cheerful. When it comes to food, you can find everything from cheap (but delicious) local food for as low as 1 EUR for a falafel set to posh, exquisite restaurants with a menu in English in the city center. The whole city is a huge bazaar where you can buy anything. There are not so many historic landmarks but the Citadel and the Roman Theater are nice, and the view from there is charming.

i would definitely recommend this city for travelers because it is a charming and colorful town it is true that it is a big city one of the biggest in the Middle East but it has everything for everyone. restaurants, bars old ruins, shops new ones and old style a like And it has wonderful and kind people anytime ready to help and to make your stay a wonderful experience. Moving around is easy despite the traffic could be hard sometimes, there are massive traffic jams at the rush hours but there are a great deal of taxis they are yellow and use meters the price is not high There is also Uber and the local Careem Places to go, rainbow street for many it is the most beautiful street in Amman, you may try the best falafel in the Middle East at Al Quds there are many bars and restaurants and shops that sell souvenirs some good stuff. Downtown is a bustling area we bought coffee from one of the oldest coffee shops in town, there are also I think 3 Habiba sweets that sell baclava and kunafeh made in many ways The habiba sweets shop between King Faisal square and K Ghazi street it is said to be the original but they all have delicious sweets The new area in the Abdali the Abdali boulevard and the Abdali Mall are worth a night out The citadel is a must it is inhabited from the old times it was the center of the kingdom of Ammon and there are ruins from the period of the Romans and the Byzantines and also the Omayyad also a must is the roman theater in the Hashemite Square For going out one may try the Paris Square in Jabal al Lweibdeh Amman is the capital of an amazing country, it is a safe place to go I loved it

Amman is a fantastic city with wonderful people who are trustworthy and with integrity. They are respectful and appreciative of tourists and aren't overtly out to get you. The food is absolutely fantastic here and really cheap for what you get. Amman itself is also great for shopping and seeing beautiful historic sites. I suggest eating where the locals eat and they are for the most part able to understand a little bit of English everywhere you go.
