About Utrecht

Including tips for the best time to visit Utrecht

The city of Utrecht is the historical and educational heart of the Netherlands. With beautiful canals, artistic cafes and fascinating museums, this Dutch city embraces modernity while preserving its culture.

The historical and cultural treasures of Utrecht are stored in its various museums. The Centraal Museum displays the contemporary art, urban history and fashion of this Dutch city. You may stop at Museum Speelklok – a place that preserves ancient musical boxes and clocks, self-playing instruments, and hosts live music performances. At 368 feet, The Dom Tower is the city's symbol. After climbing around 400 steps, you’ll reach the top of the tower from where you’ll get to witness panoramic views of the entire city. Once a part of Dom church, the tower was separated in the 17th century after a tornado destroyed the nave of the cathedral.

Be it flowers and vegetables or vintage clothes and fabrics, Utrecht offers various markets fit for a variety of shoppers. At the Bloemenmarkt, you'll be welcomed by an array of fragrant and vibrant flowers. Here, you can buy a few plants from the street-side stalls if you wish to, or simply admire the explosion of colours in the market. During your Utrecht trip, you can spend a Saturday morning in Lapjesmarkt – Holland’s oldest fabric market – checking out numerous ribbons, buttons and clothes. If you prefer a modern shopping experience, you can stop at Hoog Catharijne, a shopping mall featuring a large number of luxury stores, boutiques and restaurants.

Lovely city.

Lovely city. It was more convenient to visit as we were returning to the UK via the Rotterdam to Hull ferry. We were told it’s a good, quieter alternative to Amsterdam with similar canals. It was lovely. The Hoel Mitland is an excellent hotel. Lovely lakeside. setting.Great rooms and breakfast. Further out from the city centre than we thought but excellent bus service links so not a problem.

Utrecht is a beautiful town with an interesting mix of old and new. I was amazed by the amount of bicylces everywhere. Which is a refreshing way of movement. For me, being mobility impaired it was a little difficult to move around simply as there were little alternatives. Utrecht is certainly a place I would want to visit again with a bit more time and ability to move around fairly freely. The ship tour from central is very nice and informative. I was again impressed by the cleanliness. The friendliness and assistance provided by the people of Utrecht was very welcome and appreciated.

A great place to visit if you're looking for a chilled break as the pace of life feels slower, well except for those on bicycles who're whizzing around but even then you get used to that after a day there. The atmosphere as you're mooching around is lovely and whether you're stopping for a coffee, lunch or dinner everyone is really welcoming and the range of choice is super. There's a lot on offer if you want to do some shopping from big names to smaller boutique shops. The train station from Amsterdam (around 30 minutes) drops you in a central location and it's a lovely journey too.

I recently visited Utrecht and I must say, it was a delightful experience. The city has a perfect blend of old-world charm and modern amenities. The canals and narrow streets give it a unique character and make it a great place for a leisurely stroll. The iconic Dom Tower is a must-see attraction and offers stunning views of the city. The local food scene is also worth exploring, with plenty of cafes and restaurants serving delicious Dutch cuisine. The people are friendly and welcoming, which adds to the overall experience. I highly recommend visiting Utrecht, whether it's for a weekend getaway or a longer stay. It's a hidden gem that's definitely worth discovering.

Utrecht is a very beautiful city that is set out along canals. There are many interesting shops and restaurants located alongside the canals. It is located in the centre of the Netherlands which makes it easy and convenient to get to from other parts of the country. it is also the birthplace of Dick Bruna, which created the classic character of MIffy/Nintje, who brings much joy to both young and old fans throughout the world.

Had heard from dutch people that we had met over the years, that we should vist Utrecht - and we were not dissapointed. We would especially recommend that you rent a bicycle a take a ride in the vicinity of the city. We had a wonderfull ride to the Wecht lake, north of the city.
