The city of Utrecht is the historical and educational heart of the Netherlands. With beautiful canals, artistic cafes and fascinating museums, this Dutch city embraces modernity while preserving its culture.
The historical and cultural treasures of Utrecht are stored in its various museums. The Centraal Museum displays the contemporary art, urban history and fashion of this Dutch city. You may stop at Museum Speelklok – a place that preserves ancient musical boxes and clocks, self-playing instruments, and hosts live music performances. At 368 feet, The Dom Tower is the city's symbol. After climbing around 400 steps, you’ll reach the top of the tower from where you’ll get to witness panoramic views of the entire city. Once a part of Dom church, the tower was separated in the 17th century after a tornado destroyed the nave of the cathedral.
Be it flowers and vegetables or vintage clothes and fabrics, Utrecht offers various markets fit for a variety of shoppers. At the Bloemenmarkt, you'll be welcomed by an array of fragrant and vibrant flowers. Here, you can buy a few plants from the street-side stalls if you wish to, or simply admire the explosion of colours in the market. During your Utrecht trip, you can spend a Saturday morning in Lapjesmarkt – Holland’s oldest fabric market – checking out numerous ribbons, buttons and clothes. If you prefer a modern shopping experience, you can stop at Hoog Catharijne, a shopping mall featuring a large number of luxury stores, boutiques and restaurants.

Utrecht center is reaaaaaly nice.
July 1, 2022
Utrecht center is reaaaaaly nice. Especially for physically fit people who walk or bike. People are open, interested and friendly, everyone speaks english of course. Didn't have time to look around a lot, shall do more next time. The restos on the river bank, down, are of course "touristicky" but still in a nice way, and this is of course the best stylish way to have a meal ;-)

Utrecht is a very vibrant city, similar architectural style to Amsterdam, but less busy. With a good blend of old and new makes for an interesting place to walk around. There are many waterways to sit down, have a drink and watch the world go by. Only 30 minutes from Amsterdam definately worth a visit.

Lovely place to wander around, lots to see and plenty of bars and restaurants. A good base to travel around, the train service is well connected to visit other local towns. Easily accessible from Amsterdam airport, around 40 minutes travel time. We ate a small place called Smaak which we would highly recommend just off one of the main squares on Zakkendragerssteeg 40, 3511 AA Utrecht, varied menu with daily specials and good prices.

Ultrecht is a fairly large city with a historic center, a university, canals and beautiful park areas that are accessible by walking. Some unusual sites that set it apart is an underground tour which you can take to see the original Roman walls and other features, the st Catherine monastery museum which has lots of Catholic religious articles that are unusual in the Netherlands because of the great white washing that occurred when Catholicism was banned and the Sonenburg conservatory, where one of the oldest telescopes in Europe is. They have excellent programs for children to visit and the park directly surrounding it is lovely. Another unique feature of the center is the terraces alongside the canals at water level. There are some restaurants, artists workspaces and shops along here. I visited De Haar castle from here which is accessible by public transportation.
