Baixa / Chiado
0.2 miles from downtown
Welcome to Old Lisbon. Baixa’s pedestrian streets exude a charm of yesteryear, with expansive Praça do Comércio embodying Lisbon’s 18th-century grandeur. From there, head uphill to Chiado for a coffee in poet Fernando Pessoa’s old haunt, A Brasileira. Or take the gloriously old-school Santa Justa Elevator up to the roofless beauty of Carmo Convent.

Lisbon City Center
In downtown
There’s so much going on in the city centre, it’s hard to know where to start. Baixa impresses with its architecture and Chiado enchants with its sophistication. Bairro Alto offers night owls a shindig with a view and Avenida Liberdade brims with designer shops. And for a taste of ordinary Lisboeta life, head to the residential streets of Saldanha.

Hail the Age of Discovery! Belém is jam-packed with opulent buildings from Portugal’s golden era, when her explorers ruled the waves. Stand agog at Jerónimos Monastery’s stunning stonework, replete with maritime motifs saluting Vasco da Gama and company. Then set a course for the unique Belém Tower, jutting out into the Tagus like a caravel of old.

Parque das Nacoes
4.5 miles from downtown
A classic for a Sunday stroll. The steel curves and glistening glass of Parque das Nacoes are a far cry from central Lisbon’s old-world splendour. Follow the riverside boardwalk past the array of new-fangled buildings and sculptures. Give your taste buds a fishy treat at a waterfront eatery before feasting your eyes on marine life in the outstanding Oceanarium.

Bairro Alto
0.4 miles from downtown
Bairro Alto has something of the Jekyll and Hyde about it. Climb the quaint cobbles during the day and you’d never guess what night-time antics go on here. The narrow streets fill with revellers who spill out of overflowing bars, plastic cups in hand. Catch the sunset from Park Bar’s terrace before ducking into the maze of watering holes. “Saúde”!

Located on the edge of the Atlantic Ocean, Lisbon is one of Portugal's most charming cities. Walk down any of its cobblestone streets and there's a good chance you'll come across some traditional fado music or "pastelarias" serving fresh "pastéis de nata" or custard tarts. The old-fashioned tram 28 is one of the last of its kind still operating in the city, and provides a fun way to get between the popular Graça, Alfama, Baixa, and Estrela districts.
The central Bairro Alto district is a great place to try out some of the capital's famous cuisine. Be sure to order some "bacalhau à Brás" (shredded cod with onions, eggs, and potatoes) or a classic "cozido à portuguesa" stew.
Visit the ancient São Jorge castle and Santa Justa Elevator for a fascinating blend of history and panoramic views. Lisbon is also home to Ponte Vasco da Gama—the longest bridge in Europe—and its sister bridge, San Francisco's Golden Gate Bridge, Ponte 25 de Abril.
Lisbon also has great surfing spots like Carcavelos and Costa da Caparica, offering plenty of long sandy beaches.

Our first visit.
April 18, 2024
Our first visit. A really interesting mix of architectural styles and topography. Wonderful weather helped but I doubt that is unusual. Restaurants everywhere! We took a few short excursions by train and found that service very good and straightforward. A great deal of history and plenty of things to do. Very walkable if a bit hilly in places, if a problem take a tram!
Lisbon is a wonderful and historic city to visit.

Lisbon is a wonderful and historic city to visit. The people are friendly and helpful, even with the language differences. The waterfront area is very walkable and taking the tram a unique experience. The restaurants and coffee houses are plentiful and make the walking an even more enjoyable experience.

Lisbon is a treasure trove of beauty, culture, international cuisine and wonderful, welcoming people from all over the world.Transportation is well organized(and fun, especially the vintage trams)but seeing the city on foot is best, if you have sturdy walking shoes: Lisbon’s fascinating sidewalks and old cobbled stone streets (and hills!) are not old-foot friendly. The Gulbenkian Museum and gardens are a world class treasure, not to be missed. And a night at a Fado Cafe!
Wonderful!

Wonderful! Rich in history, scenic places, beautiful weather and good food.... and wines.... and beer. If you fancy walking, there are mostly hills and valleys so you will get quite a tonus after a few days.
I spent about 5 days in Lisbon and 3 in Porto.

I spent about 5 days in Lisbon and 3 in Porto. I enjoyed getting to learn about Portugal in general - arts, culture, history and the food. Be prepared for the hills.. I am a fitness instructor full time and still felt like the hills were kind of crazy. I learned how to get around anyway!
we visited Lisbon for the weekend and enjoyed it very much.

we visited Lisbon for the weekend and enjoyed it very much. the city is walkable, but there are metros to catch back from the riverfront as it may be a bit much to walk all the way there and back. there are also quirky funiculars to take you up the hill for Euros 4.20 return. the castle is a nice stroll up the hill! luckily there are bars up the top to catch your breath and quench your thirst. come back down the other side through all the narrow streets. Beer and Gin are expensive but food and wine was reasonable. public transport also very reasonable. the little red and yellow trams are expensive and a bit of a tourist trap. would recommend a visit
