About Ponta Delgada

Including tips for the best time to visit Ponta Delgada

Ponta Delgada is located on São Miguel Island in Portugal. This tranquil city offers a seaside promenade, a well-preserved historical landmarks and a journey into the world of the Azores culture.

Ponta Delgada is dotted with monuments, structures and squares that narrate tales of this Portuguese city's glorious past. Portas da Cidade, built in the 18th century, is the city gate that metaphorically represents the entrance of Azores. When you're done admiring the magnificent arches of the site, go for a quick visit to the Portuguese Manueline-style Igreja Matriz de São Sebastião – one of the most beautiful churches in the area. Made with basalt stone, Mae de Deus Church is located atop a hill and offers panoramic views of the city.

If you get hungry after a day of exploring Ponta Delgada, get yourself a seat at O Museu for a delicious plate of grilled swordfish. Boca de Cena is another place that you must try on your Ponta Delgada trip. This owner of this restaurant not only cooks but also serves everything on his own. Try not to miss the crispy octopus and the honey braised tuna when you're at this restaurant.

João Paul II International Airport connects Ponta Delgada to some major European and North American countries. There are a good number of cruise lines that stop at Ponta Delgada as well, if you’re looking for a different way to travel to this city.

Very helpful and friendly staff, clean rooms.

Very helpful and friendly staff, clean rooms. There was a town festival, PDL White Ocean 🌊 festival everyone was to wear white, the front desk sent white hats to our room to complete our outfit. Even though it was a night festival. My friend and I would definitely recommend this hotel to our friends and family.

I would recommend all to go to the higher floors of the hotels since Ponta delgada city has a lot of issues with the cockroaches. So book your accommodation wisely and don't spare the cost. Also book the car 3 months in advance if you are going in pick season, since cars are scares and the prices go insanely high. I would definitely recommend Furna, it has wonderful parks and nature around is amazing and the closest beach is one of the best on the island. The city center of Ponta Delgada is nice to visit, few churches in the site worth visiting and have some nice restaurants with good prices also, Portugal is cheaper than the rest of EU. Shops are a bit like going back to 90s but still interesting to see. On this island all is about hte nature and parques and this is just wonderful.

Don't spend too much time by the marina. Head out to the rest of the island , it is beautiful. You will need a car or a scooter if you really want to soak in the islands natural beauty and the small towns

Loads of eating places couldn’t recommend a favourite one they were all good even the cheap places, you should do the whale watching trip well worth it. If you have a car the whole Island is amazing for walking and great sight seeing, Furnas for the thermal springs, Sete Cidades just breathtaking views, great beach at Ribiera Grande, and the walks are well sign posted with great views just a great place to visit, this our second time here and this Island is a gem

The center is a pleasant place to wander, with good restaurants, a fair number of monumental buildings, a pleasant waterfront, and several impressive parks and gardens. While the Azores is mostly about natural places, which are accessed via day trips, the town itself exceeded my expectations as a place to spend time, see some historic and scenic sights, and enjoy some great food and drink. The airport is also easily accessible, which made it very workable to do a day trip to another island during our stay.

Love PDL.

August 3, 2022

Love PDL...great city with lots of excellent restaurants and walkable streets, shopping, ocean front. Highly recommended. City was very busy with tourists and visitors so restautants were packed. Suggest reservations for dining out. Also many of the sites were over crowded so woild go back any month but July or August.
