I really enjoyed just escaping Tapei for a few days and basking in the nature, even if one day was just storms and rain. There was some vegan options at Old Street and at the hotel, and the view across the water was incredible. Tourist trap.
Tourist trap. Beautiful for photos (if you're ok with hundreds of people in the background) but everything else was bad -- soooo overcrowded. The food was bad (except for pineapple cakes) and everything was only open during the peak of the day - around 10-7, so forget about breakfast or a late dinner. If you insist on seeing it then I think a day trip would suffice, sadly staying the night was not at all beneficial because once the day tourists leave on their tour busses, the whole place shuts down with metal doors on all the shops in the street so doesn't even make for a good photo.Guest review byTaylorUnited States - 8.0

A tip to other guests: you can take a taxi from the train station directly to this hotel and cost 270NTB, instead of spending many minutes climbing the stairs and getting lost like I did. I didn't know earlier and wasted a lot of time. But on my way down the host called a taxi for me, saved me the pain of carrying a suitcase down. Remember to bring your own shampoo and conditioner, and bring a bath towel if you are used to the hotels in Taipei.Guest review bySmile - 10.0

Jiufen, specifically the Old Street area, is no doubt a touristy area. My husband and I had a lot of fun trying the different food and snacks and walking through Old Street and seeing all the lanterns lit up. The morning mist added a little magic to the place. We opted to stay overnight so we can enjoy the village after the tour groups have left during the evening and before they arrived in the morning. Would recommend anyone to do the same. You get to see the charm of Old Street and the village when the crowds are gone. The view of the mountains and sea from the village was breathtaking. I went to visit the mining sights and its related history. I enjoyed the scenic views. As a photography enthusiast I took a lot of average photos as I am not a good photographer. But I like to take a lot photos. Old Jiufen Street was very busy with many tourists and a lot of things to buy and eat. The owner was lovely and the rest of the staff were fun to chat with. The location is great for hikers as you can easily get to the nearby towns via bus for the longer mountain walks. Very close to jiufen town as well. The town is very quiet at night, but there is an easy bus to Ruifang where you can get a cheap dinner. Facilities were clean and bathrooms were nice and spacious. After getting round in the evening along Jiufen old street you can just walk back to the hotel and relax. The place is very quiet and clean (well, not super super clean but you can expect a very good level of cleaness for this old house) The place is also very cute and traditional. The breakfast is exceptional. You can sit on the balcony and enjoy Jiufen view during having breakfast. The people who take care of the place are very nice and caring.
