About Kyiv

Including tips for the best time to visit Kyiv

Ukrainian history and heritage revolves around Kiev, the nation's capital and largest city. Founded sometime in the sixth or seventh century CE, Kiev remains one of the oldest cities in eastern Europe and has survived great changes brought on by the destruction of World War II and the effects of Soviet rule. Here, Brutalist architecture and traditional cafés share streets with urban art and modern skyscrapers – all of which are testaments to the city's ever-evolving personality.

Religious landmarks are the hallmarks of Kiev, two of which date back to the 11th century and hold UNESCO World Heritage status. Kiev Pechersk Lavra – a still-working Orthodox monastery – captivates with its gold-domed churches, bell towers and underground tombs. Saint Sophia Cathedral is Ukraine's oldest church and is better known for its interiors, which are covered in original frescoes and mosaics. Although St Cyril's Monastery features a newer Ukrainian baroque facade, its medieval Kievan Rus–style interior looks just as it did when it was built in the 1100s.

Museums are plentiful in Kiev and a great way to discover various facets of its history. The National Museum of the History of Ukraine During the Second World War is crowned by the Motherland Monument, which honours those that served during the war. At the State Aviation Museum, you can see Soviet-era aircraft including military jets and helicopters. The Mykola Syadristy Microminiatures Museum is more offbeat, featuring tiny sculptures and art that can only be seen by microscope.

Not safe at the moment due to the current war with Russia.

Not safe at the moment due to the current war with Russia. Constant alarms of rockets flying by. Curfews at 23:00. Police will stop you and demand to see your passport and question you about the reason to be in ukraine. Walking after sunset can be dangerous, thieves might target your belongings. Make sure you carry medical insurance with evacuation. Make sure your insurance can provide immediate payment to emergency facilities otherwise you won't get any treatment. Or pay in cash in order to be treated.

I hate big cities, but Kyiv is very beautiful.

August 21, 2022

I hate big cities, but Kyiv is very beautiful. The nature surrounding the suburbs or in the small Island in the Dnipro river is amazing. There are beautiful beaches to swim in the Dnipro. Beautiful squares and parks, modern art installations made of rusty Russian tanks. Sad that they dismantled the Russian/Ukrainian friendship monument, but quite understandable. The beautiful old buildings, incl. museums, theaters, many orthodox churches, the old cave monastery, all kept in pristine condition, are impressive. The subway built in Soviet times very artfully designed as well, station near theater depicting old medieval rulers of Kyiv in mosaics. The depth of the rolling stairways into the subway on the right bank of the Dnipro is an interesting experience in itself, because both river Banks have such different height. Destruction in the suburbs from the Russian invasion still much visible but being repaired fast.

I am here as a volunteer during the war, so it is different at the moment. But I get to see all the incredible architecture without too many people around. The centre is superb and exceptionally clean. There is a wealth of history here and a lot has English translation with it. Many signs do as well, which makes it easier. Outside the main historical centre, there is an increasing amount of western influence, especially the stunning Gulliver Mall. Coffee places are everywhere and store food and drinks are comparable to England, although usually cheaper. Stay in the centre, you can easily get to everything of interest from there by walking or by the abundance of public transport.

A lovely city for visiting, cultural, and lots of sites to see. Many good and varied Restaurants, bars and discoteques. Metro is excellent for getting around, and very cheap at 8 uah per trip. about 23p in English money. lots of green areas to visit sit and rest, and of the course the river itself. If you have not been it is time to visit.

Difficult to say at the moment, on account of the war.

July 13, 2022

Difficult to say at the moment, on account of the war. I am here as a volunteer, but from what I've seen so far, it has a rich history and modern infrastructure. Even now, it is possible to do most things on a daily basis and the cost of things, especially accommodation is insanely cheap, due to the huge availability. There are no tourists and many residents have left, so it is quiet by city standards, but I can see how vibrant it will be again when Ukraine has won this war.
