About New York

Including tips for the best time to visit New York

Visiting New York City is sort of like déjà vu – countless films and shows are filmed here, so all the yellow taxis, hot dog vendors, and crazy Manhattan lights always feel strangely familiar. It's also home to the world's most famous skyline, dominated by the Empire State Building, an Art Deco masterpiece. Constantly reinventing and setting new trends in fashion, food, and art, the city is also a major hub for finance and trade with the famous Wall Street at its core.

The city is split into the boroughs of Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, The Bronx, and Staten Island, and each has its own unique feel. Manhattan is home to hip neighborhoods like the Greenwich Village and SoHo, while Brooklyn has its Botanic Garden, the New York Aquarium, and the famous Coney Island boardwalk. A ferry from Battery Park to Ellis Island offers incredible views of the city before reaching the fascinating Immigration Museum. You'll also sail past the iconic Statue of Liberty with plenty of time to take photos from all angles.

Broadway shows are second to none, featuring a variety of major musicals and plays. The enormous Central Park offers an oasis in the middle of all the busle, perfect for a peaceful stroll past its lakes, outdoor theaters, and ice-skating rink.

New York is served by three major airports: JFK, Newark Liberty International, and LaGuardia, with public transportation options available at each one.

It is busting, live and a somewhat untidy city. It is a must if you have never been there, not so much for the sightseeing but for the life of the city itself. The Museums all very good and worth visiting, shopping, the park, broadway and many more

I always enjoy New York.

April 22, 2024

I always enjoy New York. I don't come as often as I did when I was growing up, but its always a pleasure. Nothing like grabbing a New York slice! It's easy to get around, if it were warm enough I would've walked everywhere, but I just did ride shares.

We were pleased with all at the hotel.

We were pleased with all at the hotel. All of the scaffolding makes a trip now very disappointing from the stand point of aesthetics in the city. It had been a number of years since I had been there and that was not the issue it now is.

We felt safe walking about the City and there was a nice atmosphere. Food and drinks can be quite expensive but we were always able to get reasonably priced food. We loved the open spaces like the Hi Line park and little Island park and loved walking the Brooklyn bridge from the Brooklyn side. Brooklyn had a great vibe and was clean and modern and we got a great view of the Manhatton skyline when we walked over the bridge. Roosevelt Iskand is also worth exploring with the Lighthouse and sculptors of Nellie Bly. New York is easy to navigate on foot and also easy to use the subway. Public transport is not expensive and the public transport from the airports is great and easy to navigate.

I have always looked forward to visiting New York City - I have been to New York many times over the years but not since Co-Vid. I am very sorry to say I was very disappointed at the changes in this vibrant city. The food in a lot of the diners and smaller restaurants that we ate in were not good. I had known in advance that NY had become very expensive but there was always quality in the food and superb service. Always a big NY greeting and some banter no matter whether you were in a restaurant, diner, store or taxi. Sadly this time this was not the case. I found the City had lost its personality and it was hard to get away from the smell of hash on the streets. The only place that redeemed our visit to NY was the Rangers game we attended in Madison Square Garden - efficient, professional and well run. I was delighted to see a little bit of the NY bravado and spirit that I remembered was still alive and kicking there. We visited all the usual sights and NY is still thrilling and always worth the visit - what I missed most was the quality of service. We stayed in Manhattan.

Visit New York, a vibrant city that never sleeps.

April 19, 2024

Visit New York, a vibrant city that never sleeps. There is something for everyone regardless of your interest. Take the Circle line around Manhattan or the free Staten Island ferry giving you a fantastic view of the famous skyline. Take the 10 min ferry to Governors Island for a picknick . Visit Hudson Yards and walk the HighLine Take the Wall Street tour and learn about New York history and where money is "made". Enjoy the nightlife, visit the Metropolitan Opera house or take in a Broadway show Unfortunately an expensive city but read up and learn how to get by on limited budgets . Use the subway and buses, safer now with NYPD at most station Your days, week will disappear quickly and you want to come back !
