Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We are currently testing a weighted review system in Malta and Iceland (excluding hotel and vacation rental chains). For properties in these countries, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

United Statesits an old hotel, but they keep it clean, it does need some repair. that said, the floor of the womens dorm was new hardwood, and the other rooms had traditional tatami mats, which is always nice. The elevator no longer works, so , for me, that is a big problem. Especially since the women's dorm is on the 3rd floor and the bathrooms are on the 2nd ( and lst ) . Huge real kitchen , which is nice to have in a hostel, many in Japan only have a microwave , toaster , and water boiler. The dorm room sleeping cubbies were gigantic and only 4 to a room, with room darkening privacy curtains. Directly across from the train yard, which, while convenient, can be noisy, but only til about midnight, then blissfully quiet. Nice tea and coffee breakfast set up, and helpful staff. The lounge had lots of books to look through, and toys for kids. Very secure, both doors stay locked, and the rooms have A/c, although it was a nice afternoon with the windows on the 3rd floor open.

AustraliaThe train noise was quite loud and the beds were a bit uncomfortable. The room didn’t look the nicest but it was fine for a night.
Low cost and close to the train station. The man working there was nice and helpful. The free coffee was nice, there was a guitar we played in the common area as well. Not bad for one night.

United KingdomThe bed wasn’t too comfy for us but we are westerners who aren’t used to floor sleeping so that’s probably just our problem!
The room was big and excellent value for money! Super quiet too which was amazing considering the central location! There was a lovely girl working there who agreed to hold our bags for extra hours after check out so we could explore while waiting for our bullet train to our next destination :-)

NetherlandsThe neighborhood is a not the best if you want an entertaining night out. A little walk to restaurants is required (10 minutes)
We chose this accommodation for its perfect location a few minutes walk from Nagano train station. It is right next to it but there is little sound from the trains. So that was good.

FranceI didn't know where to dry my towel, but there was a coin laundry drying machine so I could have used that if I was in a hurry.
The location is perfect, very close to the station. Staff was super welcoming and explained everything clearly. The facility were easy to use, showers very clean, the bed was standard quality for a dormitory in Japan and the room had AC. I didn't need the kitchen but there was one with all the equipment you might need, and the common space to eat was cute and functional. Overall I had a great experience and even chatted a bit in Japanese with my dormitory roommate :D

CanadaThe grungiest hostel in Japan I’ve stayed in. It’s not bad, it’s typical of most hostels around the world but in Japan, you can get far nicer for around the same price or just a tiny bit more.

AustraliaThe bedding and pillows smelled like body oil. Futon mattresses were very thin. Walls had paint flaking and what looked like mould on the walls. Carpeting in corridor and stairs looked really dirty and the edges next to walls looked like they hadn't been vacuumed for years. Didn't feel very comfortable there because it felt very dirty. If you wanted a towel for the shower you had to rent it for 100 yen. Definitely not value for money. We could have stayed at a chain hotel which would have been much more comfortable across the road for cheaper. They have a policy that you must not be in the hotel from 10am to 4pm to allow them to clean... Sorry for the negative review, but the owners need to put a little bit of effort into refurbishing this old hotel. Feels like they must be making maximum profit for the price you are paying.
The showers were good and hardly saw another person there.

United StatesOur room was freezing cold. We turned on the kerosene heater for a bit, but definitely didn't feel safe leaving that running all night. One of our party arrived early to check in, since they strictly DO NOT allow check-in after 8pm, and was quite put off by the extensive rules we were to follow. We've stayed in plenty of tatami Japanese-style hotel/ryokan rooms, and these were definitely the least comfortable mats.
The hostel is indeed close to Nagano Station, but still pretty hard to find, around a corner and down an alley. Everything was extremely bare-bones... I would have expected about half the price we paid.
