The wifi was very poor but phone reception is good so not a huge issue

Good qwerky hostel in a good location. A little dated perhaps but good character and nice staff. Would recommend for a few nights for sure.

Some kitchen utensils should be replaced, like pans and tea towels, normal because of the use but they should be renovated. And the hot water tub was not as clean as it should be.

Everything was fine, kitchen and common areas are cozy and comfortable. Location is perfect. Good vibes, good pancacjes for breakfast.

Chris the hostel manager provided free tasty soup in the evenings & free breakfast consisting of cereals, toast, waffles, yoghurt etc. in the mornings. The room we had was cozy but smelt a bit musty. The beds were very comfortable.

Main building was drafty and not warm. Bedroom was very dated, nowhere to hang a towel.

The property is old and in need of some TLC but staff make the best of it. Some of the old furniture and decor style inevitably makes it hard to maintain and clean.

Our family room was very clean and beds were comfortable. Fridge in room and free coffee and tea. Kids enjoyed communal areas. Husband enjoyed using the weights. Kids loved making their own free waffles in the normal.

Would have been nice to have insect mesh on the windows since there was no AC and no ventilation if windows were closed. Locks on the doors were finicky but pretty safe in NZ anyway. Place is due for an upgrade

Nice carb breakfast provided and you can cook your own meals, walking distance to restaurants and a hike nearby. Soup was ok. Sofa provided in the queen room next to the radiator

The place felt a little run down and was geared more towards backpackers. It was fine for our needs but it did feel like ti could use a bit of an upgrade.

Location was very central. Staff, especially the manager Chris, were helpful with local advice. The value was good.

Bathrooms could get quite damp with rainy weather. Also I was unable to pay in advance and hostel charged a large surcharge via card. More hooks for hanging clothing/bags and storage in rooms would be good!

Exceeded my expectations! Beds were super comfy, private room was very spacious and quite clean, useful to have a kitchenette, plenty of hot water and no issues with shower pressure. Did not try the free brekky.

No downsides, they do an excellent job there.

We had an apartment with our own bathroom and kitchenette. The furniture was simple but comfortable, it included a sofa, table and chairs. The bed was good. There was enough space for suitcases and other stuff. Outside there was a wooden deck, also with table and chairs, where we spent the evenings. As this is a backpacker's residence, there are a lot of opportunities to chat with other people from various origins, which we enjoyed, too. The residence is located in a quiet road, but at close walking distance to a supermarket, bars and restaurants. Very nice, as we didn't need the car there. Further, the offices for heli or plane excursions are in walking distance, too. The breakfast included waffels, toast, honey, jam, coffee, tea and good company. There was also a free soup in the evening, but that does actually not deserve special mentioning. The staff was very friendly and helpful. Check-in was very fast and uncomplicated. If one is willing to make an experience slightly different from the standard motel/cottage stays, then we (50+ and 60+) can warmly recommend this backpacker's residence!

Friendly staff, socializing atmosphere. Room was ok and the location was good for accessing restaurants and market. Breakfast had options and was good. They do a nightly soup but we did not partake. Hiking Roberts Point tract.

- We had a 2 person room and it was was quite small - It was really hot with the heating turned on and really cold without it - There were several bugs and spiders in the room and bathroom

- They provided free DIY pancakes and waffles for breakfast; However the people did not read the instructions and ended up wasting a lot of pancake mix - the staff was really helpful with providing any info we needed - parking was available in the yard and on the street
