Family name history "CARUANA" The surname Caruana is of Arabic origin. However, it is intersting to note that the name has achieved the most influence and power on the small Mediteranean island of Malta. Caruana is the family name of several Maltese Noble families. The name was probably brought to the island by the Arabs who ruled Malta before 1090. In that year, Malta was invaded by Count Roger of Normandy, and the island became part of the Kindom of Sicily. The highest ranking family that bears this name is the family of Caruana-Dingli who hold the title of Marquis Fiddien. This tittle was created in October of 1785 and it achivied British Crown recognition in 1878. It was initially granted "ad personam", but the Marquis attemted to have the grant extended to his legitimate male descendants and in default to his feamle descendants. However, the title was only extended to the bearer's first born male heir. Although the family who bear the name Caruana are not titled they are of somea importance in Malta. In 1498 a member of the family was granted the position of Deputy to the Royal Creasurer of Sicily and Malta.
