Abbey is located 7 miles west of Portumna and 11 miles south of Loughrea, on the northern side of Lough Rea, just south of Galway City. There are two pubs and a grocery in Abbey, a community in County Galway that has been named after an 11th-century abbey. The village has won Ireland's Tidy Towns competition three years running. Both Portumna and Loughrea, a historic town with a number of shops and taverns, as well as an 18-hole golf course and a lake famed for its fishing, are within easy reach. Situated between the Slieve Aughty Mountains and the Burren to the south, Gort is an average-sized town on the Galway-to-Ennis Road. Many pubs in the area host nightly sessions of traditional Irish music, which has a long history in the area. Galway city and the famed Salthill beach are both within driving distance, making this a great starting point for day trips.
