The location is perfect, with stunning views, a stone's throw from the train station, and the lodge is wonderful. The stuga (cabin) was modern, well- maintained, functional, fairly comfy, with one 6-seat horn sofa, a coffee table, a large dining table and 6 chairs, 5 beds (one double in one room, 2 bunk beds, in the second bedroom), pillows and warm comforters, and a great little kitchen with a small fridge/freezer, electric stove with 4 burners and an oven, and a double sink (no dishwasher, so we washed a lot of dishes, and no microwave, so there were more pots to clean!) We loved the large clothes drying closet and the heated entry way, which helped us to stay dry and to re-use our ski clothes several times a day. The cabin was well-heated ( but we noticed that the heaters were burning hot, when our 1 yr old grandson touched one and screamed! We turned them down to 24'C). There were huge picture windows in the living/dining room and bedrooms, to enjoy the fantastic scenery during the few day light hours, and at night, to experience the amazing northern lights, which were visible two nights out of three! The steep, winding stairway to the bedrooms was manageable, but not so easy for me as I use a cane! (It also meant a round trip up and down to the toilet at night, which wasn't so great!)

Kiruna is the northernmost city in Sweden, located above the Arctic Circle in the heart of Swedish Lapland. Known for its stunning natural beauty, Kiruna offers a unique combination of wilderness, culture, and science. In winter, the city transforms into a magical wonderland, featuring snow-covered landscapes, the spectacular Northern Lights, and opportunities for dog sledding, snowmobiling, and visiting the renowned Ice Hotel in nearby Jukkasjärvi. In summer, the Midnight Sun shines for weeks, allowing endless outdoor adventures like hiking in the nearby Abisko National Park. Kiruna is also known for its fascinating history

I have been here eleven times, which must show that I like it very much. I have been here summer and winter as well. I mostly hike to Lapporten and Trollsjoen. On the other hand, I am not a fan of Kungsleden, which for me is a motorway for pedestrians.

Gallivare is a mining town and in itself not particularly interesting for holiday takers but it provides good transport options to several of the national parks in the region. It is possible to make some nice walks in the immediate vicinity of the town but these alone are not a reason to travel there.

Beautiful village, supermarket and post office close to the Icehotel. The oldest church in Sweden is located there. The torne river/ lake is stunning. The old homestead is a great restaurant located about 1km from the Icehotel. Food is delicious. Local people are very friendly and helpful.

Very cozy place with wonderful views in the middle of Lappland's montains. Over the 3.5 days we staed there we managed to ski, both alpine skiing and crosscountry and a few hikes. The weather was really nice, just a little cold (down to -22 in the morning, at the end of March), but dry, so the cold was not too bad. We managed to see also intense northern lights during one evening. According to locals it happens 1-2 times a week. The restaurant has good food at a decent price, but there are also several more expensive options that allows you to experience the local cuisine, with ingredients not much common in Stockholm as reindeer meat, cloudberries, etc.. There are only a few minor cons: The ski resort is nice, well made, just a bit small and uses only skilifts. Some of the possible other activities were in my opinion a bit overpriced. One extra advice: pubblic transport is very limited, as one should expect here, but the road is well kept, so if you want to explore around I recommend to rent a car in Kiruna..

Kiruna is a beautiful place with extraordinary winterscapes during the day and even more so on a moonlight night.. The cherry in the top was the extraordinary experience of being blessed by aurora corona and aurora borealis sighting every night we were there .. More over the museum explaining sami culture and giving us sn opportunity to be amongst reindeer was so soulful.. the extraordinary sculptures of ice and snow at the ice hotel , their classic warming drink in ice glasses was something else .. needless to say , it is a ‘must experience ‘ place.

Quiet little town surrounded by beautiful nature.

Quiet little town surrounded by beautiful nature. There's a (Swedish price so expensive) grocery store for all your needs and a small tourist attractions area with reindeer feeding and petting, and reindeer meat burgers and hot lingon berry juice plus some basic information about the Saami and the historic wooden church that was built in town. And, of course, there is the Ice Hotel. Apart from that, there isn't much to see, but of course there are many activities that can be done out in nature in the area - dog and reindeer sledding, snowmobile tours, nordic skiing, trekking, ice fishing, watching the Northern Lights, ...

Walking through the woods outside the town was the best thing for us - especially seeing the first sunrise of the year! Not a lot to see in Kiruna itself, but the Ice Hotel and the Sami museum at Jukkasjarvi are a short bus ride away. We would have liked to have visited Kiruna Church, but it's being moved! It was at Kiruna where we got our best view of the Northern Lights. We enjoyed burgers at the Empes place in Kiruna, but mostly cooked for ourselves as we had our own kitchen. There is a ski slope but it looks very limited.
