We stayed one night in the hotel the room was small and very dated. The only downfall was that the restaurant and bar was closed on the Friday night when we arrived at 7pm so we had to order a takeaway to the hotel.

We loved staying in the log cabin .it was lovely and clean .we had air con and central heating if needed. WiFi was very good. The food at the hotel was excellent amazing breakfast especially the scrambled egg. Great steak dinner. The garden was well kept .

Just the motor on the chemical toilet which went off quite often through the night. May be a fault.

Staff were pleasant and food was fab. The bed was huge and comfy. We booked a chalet so it would be quiet, which it was. Apart from the motor on the chemical toilet which went off every 15/20 minutes for 5 seconds and was very noisy. It would have been handy if it coupled be turned off overnight. Otherwise it was a nice hotel and I would go again but stay in the main building

The bathroom for our particular room had no heating, which made it very cold to use in December. Some parts of what is a very nice building, could use some TLC

The property itself is nice, breakfast was good and a fair size portion. All areas of the building we made use of were comfortable and warm (-3 at the time outside)

Not so much a matter of did not like but of more of puzzled by the requirement to provide Credit Card authorisation of £20 to cover potential problems being found with the room after our stay. We did ask for our room to be checked when leaving early next morning but was told not to worry by a member of staff, as they thought everything would be fine? The £20 was not taken but was a concern as we had not encountered this request before and did not want any problem raised after our departure.

This was just a short visit to the area for two days to visit family and friends. We were only staying over for one night so booked an Economy Room at The Grange Hotel. The room was fine, clean and comfortable and with the usual tea and coffee facilities plus TV. Bathroom was adequate although quite small.

The smaller single room out in the annex were very small and not in very good condition. The staff are strict on booking time slots for breakfast and dinner despite never seeming to be that busy at any time.

Stayed several times in the last few months whilst working at the hospital in Bury St Edmonds. Nice rural location offering plenty of walks/runs. Very nice food, generally friendly staff. The larger rooms/suites (rooms 4 and 14) are very spacious and comfortable and there’s a lovely historic feel to the building overall.

View from each window of our room overlooked a roof. Had to be careful walking round or your hit your head on the slanting ceilings.

I didn’t feel safe on the external staircase to my room, and slipped on the way down when carrying my bags.

I booked at the last minute and would have preferred a hotel in town. Checking in took for ever. The manager, perhaps owner, was excellent, but some staff were poorly trained and a large (and friendly) wedding party was stretching them. I had to wait about an hour for dinner and my first choice was no longer available, but the lamb curry I chose instead was first class.

Peaceful country house hotel close to Bury St Edmunds
    • Leisure trip
    • Couple
    • Superior Chalet

As the chalet is under tall trees, you have to beware of mosquitoes and flies in the summer evenings and will probably be woken up by pigeons/squirrels landing on the roof! The chalet had a wet room intended for people with mobility problems, but the toilet was situated too close to the washbasin for anyone in a wheelchair to access I think. The room had a hard, tiled floor which got very wet when the shower was used, and which would be very dangerous for anyone with mobility problems - a non-slip rubber flooring would have been safer. Air conditioning in the dining room and bar was very loud and obtrusive, but probably necessary in the summer as I don't think the windows would open.

Thurston is a very convenient rural location for tourist destinations around Bury St Edmunds, such as Pakenham Water Mill, Lackford Lakes nature reserve, West Stow country park, Fullers Mill garden and Wyken Vineyard. Grange Hotel is in an old, presumably Victorian house with character and a spacious garden. We chose a chalet in the grounds, and appreciated the extra space and privacy compared with a normal double room. We could sit out on the balcony in the evening, and had a very comfortable sofa in the room for watching telly. The restaurant had a wide range of meals on offer to cater for vegetarian and vegan diners, as well as people with allergies.

The shower was just on the bath so it either needed to be held, in which case the water went everywhere as the glass was not adequate at keeping the water in, or you just had to have a both. It would seriously benefit from a handle to attach the shower to.

The room had an excellent view of the garden and it was very clean. The bed was comfortable, and the room was a good size, particularly for a twin, there was plenty of room for the both of us. The breakfast was a high quality. We had the ordered breakfast (opposed to the buffet) as we need to leave earlier. It was good that they were able to accommodate.
