Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We are currently testing a weighted review system in Malta and Iceland (excluding hotel and vacation rental chains). For properties in these countries, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

United KingdomIs there anything about Whitby not to like? Never.
We stayed in the garden. I loved the simplicity of it, quite quirky in a getting back to basics kind of way. When inside and the weather a little wild out, it felt really cosy and being with the family close together we had a good laugh. The breakfast was really really good with enough choice without being overwhelmed. We will definitely be back and I have told a few people about how good it was. If you want value for money and somewhere to call base for a few days this is ideal

EstoniaCan be noisy, but after 10 PM it was really quiet. Also, the room was quite small, but still ok.
Very polite and helpful staff. Good breakfast.

United KingdomA few improvements might be: More hooks in the huts, toilet and shower room. Shower gel in the shower room, along with cloths to mop up. A small bedside table in the shepherds’ huts on which to put your phone, along with a bedside light. Some general refurb of outside paintwork.
The shepherd huts were quite cosy and provided good privacy. The bed was comfortable. Tea and coffee facilities were fine and the huge bottle of water in rooms much appreciated. The pub food was really good, probably as good as pub food gets. The beer was fabulous. Staff were friendly and helpful. Good flexibility in providing a packed breakfast,

United KingdomWe had one slight issue and it in no way impacted our weekend, we had an amazing stay and would 100% stay again. But our boys stayed on the sofa-bed in the chalet and kept complaining it was too uncomfortable - naturally we told them they'd be fine, we used to sleep on sofa beds all the time when we were kids, but they were up at 1:30am unable to sleep. So I swapped them and turns out they were right. The mattress wasn't thick enough and you could feel the frame through it. This could be easily rectified and would not prevent us from staying here again.
We loved our stay at the windmill. The staff were amazing, very friendly and made you feel right at home. The chalets were cosy and clean and everything you could need for a nice night away. The communal toilets and showers, which might put some people off, were spot on, well kept and clean as a whistle. The people that run this establishment deserve a lot of credit.

CanadaWe’d have done better with an ensuite with a shower as opposed to a bathtub. Bathtub looked cool, but we like our showers. Wifi was virtually nonexistent in our room so we accessed from corridor or dining room.
Easy parking. Clean comfortable room. Breakfast was good and varied. Staff very helpful. Very quiet considering you’re attached to a pub.

United KingdomTardy communication with the hotel through the Booking.com message facility. May be difficult to park in the small car park but there is street parking immediately opposite on a very quiet road, which is where we parked and is not really an inconvenience. The room was small but okay for a stopover. The bar lacked atmosphere.
Clean room with comfy bed. Good breakfast and enjoyed the tasty dinner, served at lighting sspeed. Spacious bathroom (hand-held shower only). A 5 minute drive from Whitby. Worth noting that one of the three rooms has a bath in the bedroom, so an option depending on your preferences.

United Kingdommy only negative thing to say about our stay was that the bed is quite short and the mattress is very firm in the middle but too soft on the outsides. I am only 5'4 and my feet were poking out the bed when we were sleeping. It didn't ruin our stay, but made it hard to get a good night's sleep
The room was lovely, very well decorated and very clean. The bathroom was gorgeous and the bathtub was quite big! Our room had a little desk with a drinks tray and a vanity, we also had a big wardrobe with hangers inside :) The staff were all very lovely and polite, the pub/restaurant was nice to sit in on an evening too. We played cards by the fireplace and it was super cosy
