Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We are currently testing a weighted review system in Malta and Iceland (excluding hotel and vacation rental chains). For properties in these countries, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

United KingdomThe windows were in need of an upgrade. There was a note not to leave them open for the night due to squirrels.. It would be great to have a net, allowing to keep the windows ajar in the night.
Breakfast was good, location was great, loved the grand games room.

GermanyThe hostel could do with a little attention on freshening up some of the paint and plastering work here and there and some of the living room furniture i.e. the blue chairs need to be scrapped please as they're really past their best. The toilet downstairs near the kitchen is very tired too, so could do with some updating. But overall, the place is nice, really. It's an old building and you have to forgive a lot of the imperfections. They somehow add to its charm.
We really liked our stay at this youth hostel. It's a lovely old building with grand features like a lovely great living room and a posh stairwell, and lots of little alleyways and corridors and rooms to hide in for a great hide and seek session with the kids 🤣. It was a tad on the expensive side with £80.- for one adult and three kids in one room, but hey ho, we had a good evening so it was worth it in the end. The staff made us very welcome and we played a couple of the board games on offer till late at night. The management could probably look at getting a few more proper sized games into the selection as e.g. the travel version of cluedo is literally unplayable and the others are quite tired now. Youth hostel and board games go hand in hand I think and it would be nice if they'd invest a bit more on that front. We didn't have any dinner or breakfast there so we can't comment on it, but the cooking facilities were really good and we were made very welcome and comfortable by the staff making use of it.

United KingdomWe didn’t manage to get a room with a private bathroom - not the hostel’s fault but fellow guests used our shared bathroom for a long time!
The hostel had everything we needed for a stay after a rainy hike! Rooms were clean and warm, drying room was handy too.

United StatesThe evening meal was dreadful, and expensive for the quality. This seems to be standard though, as I've experienced the same at other hostels. Noisy people returning late was annoying, given the fact that I had an early start in the morning. Shared bathroom was in need of a clean
Breakfast was nice, but selection was a little limited compared to other hostels I've stayed in. The actual main building was stunning, the annex where I stayed was in need of better more reactive lighting outside, for safety.

United KingdomGreat location, just a short walk from Castleton high street and all it's pubs/restaurants/shops. Had a private room with ensuite and the shower was great, although anyone over about 5ft 8 would need to crouch a bit to get their head under the shower!

United KingdomThe beds are not the comfiest, and the bedding is austere but it's more than serviceable (plus, I brought my own pillow, which helped loads.
I love staying at YHAs in general, but they are all different: Castleton Losehill is special it is a beautiful property perfectly located in the Dark Peak- for me it's a great stopping point halfway between work and home. But more than that the villages around have tons of lovely pubs, shops, and history as well as being in a beautiful part of the world where you can go for walks long or short. YHAs are no frills but for 30 pounds to have your own room, have it be quiet and free wifi- you can't really complain.

United KingdomThe staff were helpful but usually only one person on reception which for the size of property and the fact it was fully booked, I would have expected more staff. Rooms were basic which I was expecting but there was very little storage considering there were four beds and only one locker/cupboard.
Beautiful location and property. Good facilities for cooking and relaxing with a number of rooms including a library.

United KingdomAlthough it is an old building, the internals of the hostel felt very dated, but maybe that adds to the allure of staying at this location. Food prices have seemingly increased, unless the YHA I stayed at in Wales had its own deals. We chose to walk 15 minutes into Castleton to sample the pub menus where food was either cheaper or similar & much, much better options.
The property is in a great location for walking to Mam Tor. It’s also possible to hike over Mam Tor to the Kinder plateau (Low & Scout), however expect to hike c.20-25km. Food & beverages on site (see below). Water refill station at reception. Short walk to Castleton (recommended).
