Erfurt is one of the most beautiful European cities. The old town is amazing with its old and beautiful houses, winding cobbled streets, old and imposing churches from as far back as 1203. Most of the streets are lined up with cafeterias, restaurants at very reasonable prices serving delicious pastries, ice creams and traditional German sausages and other meat. People are out and about in this bustling city. The cafes and restaurants are always full which is the traditions of the Germans - to eat outdoors. Erfurt is amazingly beautiful and clean with delicious food.
The restoration of the Altstadt and it's main historical features proceeds apace and is already superb, easy to get around, charming street trams if you don't want to walk. Deep and accessible history.
After traveling through Germany for a month, Erfurt was THE perfect town to end our trip in. They have done a beautiful job of maintaining the old town. It is very walkable, clean and not in your face commercial....just a beautiful city proud of its heritage. The Stasi museum and the oldest synagog were especially an education.
If you want an impression how people lived in the middle ages, you can literally put your hand on it. Lots and lots of beautifully renovated buildings of different architectural styles and periods shape a unique city center, a walkable history book,. City guides are very knowledgable and helpful with hintes - you feel their love and pride for the city. Hospitality & food is also great. The city is used to tourists but not overcrowded, you feel as a valued guest of the inhabitants. Very friendly and helpful people: I happened to bump into the (real) Mayor dressed in a middle age major's costume rushing to a convention. Nevertheless he took the time to explain to me how to return to my accommodation (the Augustin monestary) l after I had lost my way.
Historical town a little off the beaten path. We were visiting our daughter who was living abroad. She wanted to hit as many towns as she could and we were not disappointed. Only had one day here, but could have easily enjoyed 2-3 days. Don't miss climbing the church tower at the end of the Merchants Bridge for an amazing 360* view of city. Would have enjoyed touring the Martin Luther Monastery, but ran short on time- very peaceful compound. For families, there are cute sculptures around Merchants Bridge of popular Sandman kids TV series characters. If you have extra time- visit the Citadel- we walked up at dusk- could've spent more time walking that perimeter as well- like a nice big park with various areas to explore and overlook the city below- some areas under renovation, but set to be completed soon. Eat dinner on the Dom square- the lights at night are gorgeous! Enjoy Erfurt!
Delightful, compact city center fullofhistoric buildings and brilliant architectural features. The city is readying itself for Germany's international garden exhibition in 2021, so there were quite a lot of building sites. But it will be worth returning next year when everything is spick and span!
