Why woild anyone go to A Disney property when the real thing exists. Violet leDuc gets some criticism for idealizing in his restorations, but these gems would be lost had he not done what he did, fantastic! Pricey, but worth every penny.
The audio tour was great. In addition we did a walking tour which did not replicate the information from the audio tour, so I would recommend doing it also. Most of the better restaurants for late lunch were closed after the only English walking tour so we were stuck with bland sandwiches. C'est la vie.
The "new" city is very run down with many empty businesses but did feel very safe. The citadel itself is wonderful. Perhaps just a long weekend would be better next time. If you want to see the area surrounding, public transport does not serve the villages at all well but within Carcassonne you can reach everything on foot it you're fit and there are public transport options to get up to the citadel.
Please convince the owner to change this name. It has the connotation of the concentration camps. Bloc G. Horrific. I visited Carcasson 15 years ago and now it became more commercialized. It reminded me of all the old cities in Europe with the memorabilia . Not good.
Old city is fantastic with great choice of restaurants. We spent several days exploring the old city but you do need a car to visit some of the sites around Carcassonne. We spent time at Lac de Cavayere which has great water fun but horrible public toilets. We hired bikes and explored along the Canal du Midi as far as Trebes.
Beautiful city with medieval castle and village in city center. Surrounding countryside is spectacular with dozens of historic and scenic abbeys, ruined castles, and lovely villages. Wonderful Local cuisine and many fabulous restaurants dot the area. Our three day stay was definitely too short.
