There was excellent free coffee in the foyer which is always a plus. The room had everything we needed and was a reasonably short drive to the shops etc. Chosen for the free easy parking and price. Easy access from the road. All staff were smiley which is not always a given in my experience.
This New Hampshire hotel is within 5.1 km of Portsmouth International Airport and the Isles of Shoals. Howard Johnson Portsmouth features a gym and guest rooms with free WiFi.

Staff was wonderful, the building had good character and clearly has history being from the mid 1600s. Wish the price was a bit better but would stay again.

We have been to Portsmouth on several occasions.
We have been to Portsmouth on several occasions. We always enjoy our time here as the town is easy to manage by car or on foot. The dining scene is varied and of generally good quality. There are several nice restaurants with decks overlooking the water. An inland favorite of ours is "Cure", make sure you get the cornbread!
There is plenty of history to learn and several venues for the arts and music. Plan ahead so you can take in a play or music festival.

Kittery was a great place to visit.
Kittery was a great place to visit. It has great seafood restaurants right next to the water. The Buoy Shack is so good and has a dedicated gluten-free fryer. The parking lot is tiny, so expect to walk a few blocks away. Kittery is right next to Portsmouth, so you can visit both relatively easily. There are lots of outlet stores in Kittery if you love shopping.

The areas north of Hampton Beach have a lot to offer while being off the beaten path . We tried Wallis Beach. It was very nice and had bathrooms and decent store for last minute toys and snacks. Lots of good restaurants close by.

Dover is a cute quaint town.
Dover is a cute quaint town. These lodgings are in the hustle of Dover/Somersworth town lines. It's on a major highway in the business section. I had to be in both towns so it was good for me. I'd never vacation here. Services were next to zero.

Portsmouth NH is a fantastic city, lots of unique little shops, excellent restaurants, the city is full of culture and history, music, Prescott Park in the summer. The Kittery Maine outlets are just across the river to the north and the seacoast is just to the south. There are many tiny gems scattered around. I've been visiting Portsmouth for 50 years and still discovering something new each visit.

Kittery is very nice. Lots of restaurants and shopping. Close to the beaches too. However, our stay at the Hampton Inn in Kittery was very disappointing. We stayed there 4 nights and we never received housekeeping services. We never opted out either. We had to go down to the front desk to obtain replacements e.g. tissue, toilet tissue, clean towels etc. I asked why no service on 2 occasions and I was told the hotel is fullly booked and they don't have enough of help. Really, if that was the case I should receive a discounted room rate. I saved so I could splurge on a 4 day trip to Maine and I have to look at unmade beds and wet and used towels for 4 days....I could do that at home for free. Hampton Inn ruined my vacation.

Besides the most excellent accommodations and personable staff we loved the closeness to the beach. We spent most of our days on Jenness Beach. Fortunate to wake up early to snag one of the coveted parking permits held at the office, we lounged on the beach without worry of a parking ticket. We never tired of this beach, there before 9am until after 3pm. Then there is their restaurant Southport!! We ate there twice because the menu has so many tempting dishes and the food is so delicious, down to earth and a cut above any other restaurant in the area. Then heading north a super short distance, there is a popular ice cream place Lagos Ice Cream. This place is a treat to choose from all the flavors. I got the Albanian Baklava and it was as exotic as it sounds, yum!!
We also like this particular location because it's close enough to Massachusetts that we drove there one evening for dinner to our favorite sea side shack, Bob Lobster in Plum Island and then went to the beach for the sunset hours when the green heads were done for the day. If we were up for it, we could have traveled to Maine for a day but just wanted to hang out in Rye.
Our trip was simple, leave the mountain of upstate New York, get to the beach and stay there as many days as it takes to ingrain the environment into our bodies, mind and soul. Four nights, five days works for us. Enjoy!!

Staff was sooo helpful. Location was great for visiting our granddaughter at UNH. Housekeeping was upon request. We request once during the 4 night stay. Would stay here anytime. A bit pricey, but clean and quiet. Worth the money.

As we previously mentioned we were deceived and our accommodations didn’t meet our expectations! We booked an Executive King Suite to fit 3 of us. This hotel is under renovation and we didn’t receive prior communication that the suites were not available. We were put in a much smaller room with 2 queen beds. If we had been made aware of this change we would have made other arrangements!
