Originally, we made a booking with "Thanh Ha Guesthouse, Can Tho", however when we reached we were told about all the tour activities and prices. We found the prices quoted were double (also charging for a toddler at adult price) , so we decided to just stay in the room, as we were exhausted with the journey. But the hotel person Ha, quoted that our child would drop things, so it would be best to go to another hotel. In reality she just didn't want us to stay at the property, as we were not doing a tour at her expensive rates / prices . Note: This was after repeatedly asking her for the tour prices before reaching via booking.com messaging, she said, will discuss when we arrive. On arrival, it was all the drama, and her true nature was shown. I hope people don't get fooled with the reviews on that guesthouse, like I was.

Anyway, after all that drama, we got on the internet, and immediately booked this hotel. Turned out this hotel was opposite a nice children play area - like a mini exhibition/ rides ground, so it turned out to be fun... We went to the nearby supermarket and got essentials, and had a good meal at a restaurant nearby.
The receptionist was helpful as well.

Can tho is a nice place to visit, especially for food, so...
Can tho is a nice place to visit, especially for food, so many options and the price is very reasonable. There is a massage place close by Wink hotel, walking distance name Thanh Toan with the best price in town 100k/hour and an amazing job. It's on 33 ly thuong kiet, p tan an, q ninh kieu, tp can tho.

This Homestay is near the floating markets but a bit far...
This Homestay is near the floating markets but a bit far from the night market.
If you are used to sleeping on a soft bed, make sure to bring a camping foam pad or inflatable mattress for each person as the bed is very hard. We were not able to sleep well.
You can rent a moped from the hostess/owner to save on transportation. Explore Can Tho in all directions, including along the river and smaller lakes, and around the University.

Cai Rang is not really a nice place to stay (our homestay...
Cai Rang is not really a nice place to stay (our homestay was OK though). We thought that it would be great to be able to walk to the floating market (which we did), but the market was a big disappointment to us.

It was a beautifully decorated place.
It was a beautifully decorated place. I liked the fishing pond within the compound. We did some fishing and really enjoyed it. The staff were specially helpful and pleasant. They accommodated our needs and did much more. Very attentive staff members definitely made the stay better. We enjoyed the tour around the neighborhood. My daughter loved the trip to the goat farm. I liked the floating market. My wife really liked taking pictures around the place with beautiful flowers.

Staying with Jimmy and his family was one of the highlights...
Staying with Jimmy and his family was one of the highlights of our Vietnam trip. His home is outside the city in a peaceful area with many kind and friendly people. We stayed 3 nights and wish we could stay longer. Jimmy is a phenomenal cook who took us to the markets to buy fresh seafood and produce and cooked us a wonderful dinner. He helped choose and cook everything we were interested in including turtle hot pot and snails. We also got to eat and chat with his family including his cousin, wife, and children, all who are very friendly and lovely people. Him and his family are a representation of the incredible hospitality of the people in this region. I highly recommend everybody to come here to experience true life in the Mekong region.

Can Tho was the lush, liquid heart of Vietnam I was hoping for—a world away from our crisp South Island air. Coming from a land of empty spaces, the vibrant, water-based life here was utterly captivating.
The Cai Rang Floating Market at dawn was pure magic. It’s not a show for tourists; it’s a working, breathing economy on the water. The energy, the colours, the shouting—it’s chaotic theatre. My advice: get a small local boat, not a big tourist one, and go early. Seeing the sunrise over the river, with pho being served from boat to boat, was a top-tier travel moment.
The pace here is glorially slow compared to Saigon. Cycling along palm-shaded paths past sleepy canals, I felt a world away from everything. The people have a gentle, unhurried warmth that reminded me of home, even if the 35-degree humidity certainly did not!
As a Kiwi, I appreciated the straightforward, no-fuss nature of it all. The food is incredible—fresh, vibrant, and so cheap. Must-tries are the hu tieu noodles and anything with freshly caught river fish. Don’t expect a flash nightlife; the evenings are for cold beers by the river and early nights for the next dawn adventure.
A note for fellow Kiwis: It’s humid as. Pack light, quick-dry clothing. A local guide for the market is worth every dong—they’ll translate and get you into the thick of it. And embrace the slow pace; this isn’t a place to rush.
All in all, Can Tho offered a deeply authentic and serene slice of the Delta. It’s not about grand monuments, but about experiencing a unique way of life that flows with the river. I left feeling wonderfully refreshed, in spirit if not in body (thanks to the heat!). A must for anyone wanting to see the real, rhythmic pulse of Southern Vietnam.
