A popular quiz question is: what’s the capital of Australia? If you answered Sydney or Melbourne then it’s time to discover the real answer – Canberra. With Parliament House at its core, Canberra fans out across both sides of Lake Burley Griffin to reveal a diverse mix of museums, restaurants and bars filled with curious tourists, political persons and public servants.
Canberra was created as a solution to Australia’s 2 largest cities squabbling over the right to become the national capital. The Limestone Plains region in New South Wales was chosen as the site for present day Canberra. It was a good choice for nature lovers as it is surrounded by bushland, mountain ranges and, more recently, wineries.
The National Gallery, National Museum and National Library of Australia highlight Canberra’s cultural riches. Other notable institutions to visit are the High Court of Australia and the National Film and Sound Archive that stockpiles a collection of Australia’s early radio, television and film history.
The military also plays a significant role here with many training facilities for the army such as the Australian Defence Force Academy. An unforgettable experience is attending the Anzac Day Dawn service at The Australian War Memorial.
Australia’s cultural capital with a political punch has many hotels, motels and apartments on Booking.com for that city trip, business jaunt or family holiday.

Canberra is a great place for culture and foodies - must see are the National Gallery of Australia and the Portrait Gallery next door, Parliament House - take a free tour and have a coffee in the cafe upstairs overlooking the lake. The National Museum and the Australian War Memorial (and stay for the last post at sunset) are also on my list. The botanical gardens and arboretum are also great spots both great cafes and views from the top of the arboretum, black mountain, Mt Ainslie and Red Hill all worth the trip. Finally go for a walk around the lake - perhaps not the whole lake but the circuit from Commonwealth Ave Bridge over Kings Ave Bridge and back is an easy 4.5kms. Floriade is a must see in spring.

Having worked in Canberra early 60’s I found a huge difference as one would expect. I left Canberra knowing I didn’t want to feel privileged and spoilt as was the norm. I was saddened to see such a big gap in incomes. There was the public servants and the poor.
At least the public transport has improved.

We had a fun time with friends in Canberra. We enjoyed visiting the National Art Gallery & Portrait Gallery. Our group also spent some time around various foreshore area of Lake Burley Griffith & dined out in some yummy restaurants in the Kingston area.

This is an excellent standard hotel well located near the center of the Canberra CBD.
My room was excellent and the hotel has all the amenities expected of a good hotel.
