A brilliant little old historic town with lots to see and do IF YOU SEARCHED things out. Definately a must visit place if you like opals... in our view THE OPAL CAPITAL OF THE WORLD. Very hot and dry when we visited and so sightseeing should be done so as to avoid the periods 12 midday to 5pm each day ! We will return to Coober Pedy one day ! :-) :-) :-)
The landscape - the people - one would need at least 3 days I think to see and experience everything - there seems to be so much to do - try Nicks Pitza think that was what it was called opposite the Dessert Cave Motel - and Maggie's bakery for breakfast it was amazing - the egg and bacon bagel and hot chocolate was fabulous.
I liked that we stayed in a more modern designed accommodation. I liked it broke up our trip, traveling from Adelaide to Marla. I disliked the heat and cockroaches. I liked we had good air conditioning.
This is a dusty, mining town - there are no gardens, its too dry & dusty. The people are friendly and convivial. This is not a picturesque town, but the scenery is unique. It's certainly interesting and a sight one should visit. It is a good service town for the very isolated region and for travellers.
If you have time in Australia I would definitely recommend a visit to Coober Pedy. It’s like nowhere else I have stayed! Everyone was friendly and helpful. But need to go in cooler months as a lot of places were shut for the summer.
Coober Pedy is a fascinating place - unique in the extreme, even by comparison with other mining towns we've visited. The penchant for underground housing and tourist accommodation is a fascinating concept that sets Coober Pedy apart. When you consider the scorching 50-degree heat the township encounters during summer, it's little wonder the locals have learnt to protect themselves from such environmental extremes by digging their homes into the terra firma. The history of the opal mining pioneers of the 1900s is so interesting and there are various museums/converted mines offering a first-hand account of what life was like for opal miners. And every element of the local history is on display around the town. Another must-see attraction is sunset at the Kankut-Breakaways Conservation Reserve. The incredible painted peaks and ranges are given their most colourful, majestic hue against the setting sun. The 35km gravel road also follows the line of the famous Dog (Dingo) Fence - the longest of its kind in the world. The colourful drift across the sloping landscape has been likened closely to the famous Badlands in the USA.

Di’s place was exactly what we were looking for in Coober Pedy, quirky, clean and a dug out. The property is well located, and was the highlight of our holiday. It was exceptionally clean, had awesome facilities- even had icey poles for the kids! It was 40degrees outside but nice and cool inside! Di sent a text in the morning making dinner suggestions, and even came and said hello! Loved it, we will be back!
Coober Pedy
I took an underground motel room to get a break from the heat and flies of bush camping in April. The proprietor was super accommodating and friendly. Everything was clean and pleasant. Directly over the road I found a terrific Indian meal and the location was central for a walk about town. I’m booking in for my way home.
Coober Pedy
To stay underground was a fantastic experience to us. It was cool without air conditioner and quiet. There were spacious living, kitchen, bath room and bedroom as well as BBQ corner. The owner knows everything about Coober Pedy.

It was a great way to experience living underground. Nice to have a full kitchen because there aren’t a lot of options for food in town. The property manager and owner were both lovely.
