What I like about Cooktown is the laid back atmosphere of the place and all locals are friendly and willing to help you. The food is good in the pubs or clubs and served in a timely manner. The view from the lookout is great and it's a nice stroll around the botanic gardens. It's a great place to getaway and do very little but mix with the locals. Recommend for weekend trip.
A lot to see, great reading all the information on the statues. Cooktown is easy to get around. Look out is awesome, great views. Food at the RSL was fantastic. IGA was well stocked, people were really friendly everywhere.
If you go there everything is easily accessible. There is a bit of history there that I was not aware of before going. Breakfast at Raising the Bar was lovely. We also had a takeaway pizza from there as well. Staff at the RSL were extremely friendly. We drove out to Trevethen Falls but the walk to get there quite treacherous. If your young and fit then do it. An absolute must is the Lions Den. Great place for eating but around 25kms out of town. My husband booked a charter for reef fishing. The haul was absolutely amazing! We went in late September
A small township punching above its weight with excellent surrounding scenery, a lot of preserved historical buildings and significant history presented at both local and cultural museums by knowledgeable locals. Some great and interesting people including those who returned my lost wallet. The friendly indigenous local at the jetty who gave some of us fisho's some freshly caught live bait to increase our chances, while enjoying a brief yarn. Not to mention the friendly stallholders at the Saturday morning market. We ate our meals alfresco in the warm breeze at the Sovereign hotel. Good friendly and honest staff with good food and a cold beer. Didn't catch any fish but what a view at the sunset of a terrific day. I relaxed and lived the dream for a couple of days. Thanks Cooktown.
Cooktown is well worth a visit. It is the entry to the top end of Australia and Cape York. It is quite picturesque and has an interesting history, given that Captain Cook landed there. We liked the museum and the various memorials along the shoreline. It was easy to get around.
Very easy town to get around in. I'm not overly fit but walked so many kms easily around town and along the esplanade. There's a well priced IGA which has most things a traveller would need. Cooktown locals are very friendly, the town itself is clean and interesting to visit. There are several eating places eg Thai restaurant, Bowls Club, Sovereign Hotel and Cooks Landing Kiosk to name a few. We only ate out one night and that was at the RSL. This had a fairly ordinary menu and we would try somewhere else if eating out again. In saying that, the entertainment from Big Pups for the night was excellent. Had coffee at the Driftwoood Cafe which was okay, if you like strong coffee, ask for an extra shot. Small Saturday morning markets for fresh fruit, arts and crafts. Excellent jetty spaces along the esplanade to throw a line in. Can catch a variety of fish including mackerel, perch and queenies. Watch giant groupers being fed at Cooks Landing. Historical Lions Den Hotel is a 25 min drive from Cooktown and worth the trip for the novelty factor alone. Felt there could have been more local Indigenous history from an Indigenous perspective around the town as it seemed to be slanted in favour of the Europeans.

Very helpful staff who gave great information about the area. Close to centre of Cooktown. Fully equipped with all we needed including coffee pod machine and pods and real milk not the long life variety. Gave us the experience of staying in a caravan. Liked the en-suite in the van but so small.

The Sovereign Resort Hotel was better than most big city resorts I have stayed at, large pool, modern rooms and the staff were excellent. While the main restaurant was closed for renovations the attached cafe had great food. You wont be disappointed.
