Great little house, two double bedrooms, lounge, kitchen. Very comfy and excellent facilities, walking distance to main street. Very quiet, enjoyed sitting in the front garden, watching the birds in the very old, huge, frangipanni tree. Highly recommend.

Historic town - very cultural significant history - extremely interesting museum. RSL - good value/drinks/meals Excellent road access to Cooktown (but not in the "wet" season). Sovereign Resort did not accept American Express - only place in town that didn't, and staff in cocktail lounge had no idea what a Champagne Cocktail was !! (& used electric blender - not hand shaken = 007 most unimpressed.

It's a long drive . . . but it's a once in a lifetime trip . . . There is a lot of history to take in. The Museum is worth a visit . . . but it certainly needs some TLC. RSL provided a great meal :-) Botanic Gardens are small but lovely.

This was my first visit to Cooktown (and definitely not my last!) and I fell in love with it at first sight. I caught the Trans North bus from Cairns and it dropped me off on the main street. I had some time before I could check in so I had lunch at the Sovereign Hotel which was very tasty (and well presented) - they also looked after my luggage so I could have a quick walk around the main street which I really appreciated too. There are lots of placed to check out, eg the Historical Centre (very interesting), a couple of art galleries showcasing local artists, Botanic Gardens, Museum and statues of important people and events, including Captain Cook of course. Definitely worth a visit!

First time Cooktown visitor - enjoyed the August temperatures and the laid back vibe. Port Douglas is very different - more hustle & bustle. James Cook has become a polarising name in modern Australia - however I think his achievements, diaries and 1st hand accounts say he conducted himself well. We’ve been to his death-site in Hawaii - & they did not mention his Southern Ocean exploration on their plaques. We enjoyed the RSL, bowlo and local Thai. We walked to most places - lookout (steep) & botanic gardens & beach track. Watched a local rugby league match - they play hard & fast.

Cooktown has everything we needed, IGA supermaket & Cooktown Bargain Barn stock everything you could need. Sovreign Resort terrace restaurant, Cooktown Bakery & The Cooktown RSL were immaculate, clean & well presented. The staff at the RSL were excellent, the menu great, the food beautifully cooked & presented. Highlight of our trip was the Endeavour River Sunset Cruise, over 2.5 hours of History, good food and pleasant company. Thee Cookton Museum should not be missed!

Only there 1 night but well worth the trip. Pleasant town with lots of history. Go to museum, Finch Beach, Grassy Hill Lookout and the harbour. Coffee shop near water play area has great coffee. Had dinner at Sovereign Resort restaurant (street level). Service was slow that night but food was delicious when it arrived.

Location was great and room was very clean. They had an area that could be used for gatherings, cooking and generally relaxing. Owners are super friendly and were exceptional in providing advice on where to visit in the Cooktown area. The whole facility was supper clean and a credit to Diane & Andrew and we would highly recommend Gecko Guest House to any considering a visit to this beautiful area.

A great guesthouse halfway up Grassy Hill ( you p’ll need a car to reside there), a super-generous kitchen underneath the main house, with just two guest rooms). Magnificent views over the Endeavour River. Wonderful hosts. We enjoyed the guided 5 km hike along a ‘song line’ , a track past Aboriginal rock paintings, out of Hope Vale. Enquire at Cooktown History Centre on Main Street.

This is a gorgeous comfortable apartment with true “tropical styling”! The apartment is upstairs with a lovely veranda on two sides. The louvres in every room were wonderful, allowing the cool breeze to flow through. Thank you, Margo, for your warm welcome to Tropical Styling and to Cooktown.
