Renovated in 2011, Hillcrest Guest House is housed in a classic Queenslander building built in the 1880s. It felt like home away from home. Beautifully clean, lovely grounds and pool, and an excellent breakfast. Katrina is an exceptional host and made us feel very welcome. Would definitely stay again.
Offering free WiFi, a sun terrace with a swimming pool, shared lounge and garden, Gecko Guest House is located in Cooktown. Featuring a shared kitchen, this property also provides guests with a grill.... Every thing, The most friendliest and most helpful staff. The place was perfect for our stay. Could not have picked a better place. Will recommend it to anyone.
Milkwood Lodge features secluded cottages with a veranda offering mountain views. Guests can relax in the outdoor saltwater pool complete with waterfall. A free airport shuttle service is available. Cabin was lovely, roomy, with good facilities. Owner & host, Vera, was delightful. Warm, friendly and extremely helpful
This 4-star resort in the center of Cooktown is set in extensive tropical gardens and features a lagoon-style swimming pool. It offers rooms with balconies and outdoor furniture. This hotel is the best in Cooktown and located right on the best part of the main street. We were super impressed, and it was the perfect place to unwind after the bloomfield track and before our drive back to Cairns. Lovely pool, great staff, great restaurant.
Offering saltwater swimming pool and a BBQ area surrounded by tropical garden, Cooktown Motel / Pams Place Hostel is located at the southern end of Cooktown's main street. Leaving - Booked on price for 2 nights decided to stay only 1 night, asked if we could get a r efund but were refused.. forfeited the refund and headed south to find something better. Pay the extra if you visit Cooktown & hopefully you will get a better room.
We stayed at the Hillcrest Guest House, beautifullly refurbished old Queenslander, which included great breakfast options! We walked into town and checked out the historical landmarks, fishing off the netty at the end of Main Street, walked to the Museum which was great, the Grassy Hill lookout was a great workout hill climb and the sunset from there looking back to the Endeavour was amazing. So many places to explore in the 4wd, and the drive home along the Bloomfield track through the Daintree was stunningly beautiful
The gateway to some wonderful parts of Queensland. A beautiful little town with an interesting history and a some amazing beaches and scenery in the area surrounding it. Lots of things to see and do and some nice places to eat and relax.
Ther are multiple attractions. Two good museums for history buffs (Cook, Gold rush, railway, archives for family history, and now, belatedly, better attention to local aboriginal histories with numerous plaques and the Milbi Wall and alternative text in Cook Museum placing Vook arrival in proper context of Guugu Yimithirr people and their perceptions. For those with different interests hire cars can get you to world class rock art, and there is a lively charter fishing business from the wharfs.
Don't go to Cooktown expecting lots of activities and restaurants as they just don't exist. But like us, if you enjoy the history, views to die for and walks then this is for you. Some great food but not much choice. Enjoy!
Had long enough to view the sights, museums, etc. It would have been nice to have a bit longer to do some fishing or river cruising though. Pity the last bit of the Bloomfield Track south of Wujal Wujal is still not suited for 2WD as it would have saved a lot of extra travel from Cape Tribulation or even Port Douglas.
Cooktown had friendly and helpful locals. We visited Grassy Hill lookout with stunning views, the Botanic Gardens, the James Cook Museum and the local history museum in Charlotte Street which presents a wonderful timeline history of Cooktown. At all of the attractions the staff gave a good introduction. The Botanic Gardens is heritage listed, free to visit and has a good cafe for coffee, cakes and light meals.

The rooms were spacious. The surroundings were gorgeous with horses grazing in the long grass of a neighbouring property. The manager/owner was very friendly and very accommodating and helped us organise a free lift into Cooktown to meet the sunset cruise through Riverbend Tours.
