FAQs about hotels in Paraty

Emerald-coloured Forests and Turquoise Waters

Paraty is surrounded by emerald green forests attached to mountains that plummet directly into turquoise waters or white-sand beaches. The cobblestone streets and colonial houses of the city centre pay homage to its Portuguese roots, and accessible islands and secluded beaches lure the sun-seeking crowds.

White buildings decorated with colourful door arches and window surrounds line the small lanes of the historic old town. The 17th-century First Church of Our Lady of the Remedies watches over the shaded eastern meeting point of Matriz Square.

North of the canal are Pontal and Jabaquara beaches that are split by the Perpetual Defender fortress, built by the British in the 18th century. Hiring a boat will take you out to more remote islands like diving hot spot Ilha dos Meros or unspoilt Paraty-Mirim Beach, south of the city.

As part of Brazil’s Costa Verde coast, the nearby Gold Trail and Serra da Bocaina National Park highlight the native Atlantic forest and fauna such as the sloth.

Whether you are seeking a peaceful nature retreat, beachside guest house or city centre hostel, Booking.com has an option for you.

Beautiful city!! I was surprised with the amount of nature nearby. I would recommend: One day in the city (old town) enjoying the stores, art galleries and taking pictures; one day boat trip (visiting islands); one day exploring the beaches in the south (Trindade, praia do rancho, Caixa d'aço); and one day visiting the waterfalls and small hikes around. I would definitely go back.

I have visited Paraty twice (2023 & 2026), and had two very different experiences. In 2023 I was staying in Paraty mirin, a bit outside of Paraty more in nature. It was a great experience and we could get into town with a local bus, though we also had heavy rain during this first visit which made our trip into Paraty rather wet. In my most recent trip the we didn’t have so much rain, and were able to enjoy the old town, carnival celebrations, beaches and a sail boat trip. Paraty in better weather is a fabulous place with something for everyone, wonderful shops, restaurants and live music. It makes for a great base to explore surrounding areas. We stayed 3 nights but I think 5 would be perfect (if good weather, 2 if not) as we didn’t have time to check out Trinidade beach for example. N.B. Paraty is a tourist city. Though the old town is quaint, over tourism can be seen in the huge amount of large, noisy and polluting boat tours. Choose tours with care!

Paraty is beautiful. Historical area is definitely worth visiting. Plenty of restaurants, street food whatever suits you. We did a couple of trips too . A keep your and a boat trip combined with a Cachaca distillery both were excellent

Historic town a delight to explore even though the stones are tiring to walk on (and slippy when wet). Lovely shops, restaurants and ice cream parlours. Lots of boat trips to choose from and the nearby waterfall was fun

Paraty is a magical place. Worthwhile the trip. I visited the place in 2004 and now again after 20 years. Much has changed (many more shops and lots of boats), but the essence of the historical center and the magnificent bay did not. It will make you happy.

Paraty is a little bit of heaven. I love the water, the beaches, the islands and the jungle. Hire a boat and explore! Every night the city is a block party with tables in the street and music spilling out of restaurants. Don't miss the historical museum.

Guest review by Raymond - Food and shopping
The historic center of Paraty is well worth visiting; it is one of the best examples of a colonial settlement in Brazil. The abundance of interesting restaurants and boutiques makes strolling the cobblestone roads an enjoyable experience, but consider wearing sturdy footwear as the cobblestones can be a bit challenging. Nice to walk around the town in the early morning when the crowds are absent. Evening is the best time of day for the ambiance.

I love Paraty, and I always come back there. The city is quaint, charm, small. The Historic Centre, old from the discover of Brasil, with stone streets. This year i went to the Bourbon Jazz Festival, and it was amazing. In Paraty there are delicious restaurants, ice cream shop (O Finlandês and Pistache best ones in my opinion). And i would like to have more time to go around with boat (I just did 1 tour with the boat)and I went to a trekking (pão de açúcar)- Ride to in Parati Mirim and from there 20 min by boat. Amazing

Paraty is unique. It's best experienced by sea AND by land. The boat side of things gives better perspective. Excellent sites, scenery, shops and restaurants. Brazil at its best! Walking is a challenge because the stones are so uneven.

Unlike any other colonial town in Brazil, Paraty is by the seashore. It is very well preserved. There is much to do even in cloudy days, like visiting the rain forest and showering in the waterfalls.

Guest review by Alba Maria - Historic center
Paraty is nothing more than a tourist trap and scam. It is just 4 streets of colonial buildings with arrogant people. It is marketed extremely well as you believe that Paraty is a village of only colonial buildings however to our surprise they have added (obviously quite some time ago) more buildings and a bigger village the new town shall we call it. It is full of homeless people and danger the floor is disgusting and the people are intimidating. The supermarket is poorly built shed with insects everywhere and extremely overpriced. we left a day earlier than planned as we could not wait to escape the hell hole.

A bit long to reach Paraty from Rio by coach/bus; it’s worth the trip though, a colonial city, well preserved and surrounded by a fantastic scenic landscape; a gem delicately chiseled, away from the hustle and bustle of the Brazilian metropolises.

What a beautiful place. Above expectations. No tacky plastic Coca Cola chairs to be seen, as often found in most Spanish tourist places. Everything is well preserved and well thought through. I recommend NOT to take a tourist boat out to the beaches- they are loud and crowded. Rent a private boat instead, just ask in the harbour they late afternoon before. It’s worth it. Lots of nice eating places. This is just a paradise.

In regards of the price, the place is very good. Rooms are very clean and with all needed comodities. Location is central in Paraty and at the same time relatively quiet. Carlos and Helena have welcome us very warmly and were very helpful to organize our stay and advise us on possible visits. I thank them very much. We were a family with 3 children. The breakfast is delicious with eggs, home made cakes, fruits, cheese, ham...We strongly recommend this pousada.

La casa is located at the 1st floor of one of the oldest building of Paraty. At the ground floor you can have a tasty meal and good drinks (Il Primitivo restaurant). The main Pousada is 5 minutes away and there you have breakfast and also can eat delicious food. It is perfect to walk around and reach the port for a boat trip. In case you have a car parking only 5 minutes walk. Staff super nice and helpful!

Such a cute and beautiful hotel! It’s small and the atmosphere very nice and welcoming, the breakfast was amazing and it’s just a minute away from the historic centre. They really have an eye for detail and the service is great. They organised two trips for us when we asked for help. 100% recommended for a trip to Paraty:)
