Secret Bay, The Champs, and InterContinental Dominica Cabrits Resort & Spa, an IHG Hotel got great room view-related reviews from travelers in Portsmouth.
People are extremely welcoming and friendly. They NEED tourists and will go out of their way to help. The little buses -license plates starting with H - are so easy, frequent and cheap to get around that you are better off using these than renting a car. But if I had known in advance what I know now, I would have booked in Roseau and visited from there. Unless you go upper-class like the truly beautiful Secret Bay, or go diving (and I could recommend the French Crabits Diving Center) Portsmouth is perhaps only a one day visit.
As the second largest town on the Island, there is less hustle and bustle than Roseau, but still enough life to show you the real energy of Dominica. People selling fresh fruits a d fishermen cleaning the day's fresh catch are just two such sights you'll see. You'll get some real local food and drinks at the Purple Turtle Bar, which sits on a beautifully clean local beach down in Portsmouth. Solo travellers can get tours to all parts of the Island companies like Trinity Taxi Service, have extremely knowledgeable tour guides who can take you all over the Island.
Breakfast time limited. Quality and quantity of food excellent. The owner and staff were lovely. We were given free fruit and cake for first breakfast. Owner of hotel also gave us a lift to local shops to show us where to buy required food and drinks. Gave us free evening meal on the last night .
Cottages were comfortable and nicely situated close to the beach. The staff were friendly and tried to assist. The hotel did move me to a more accessible room when I was on crutches week 2.
The breakfast was nice and the decor is amazing the hotel itself is remarkable
