We actually stayed at Milton about three miles south of Abingdon on A34. It is very close to Didcot and a good centre for touring the Chilterns, the Cotswolds and the Thames Valley. The Waterfront Cafe at Benson near Wallingford is a great place to eat. We also enjoyed our meal at the Five Little Pigs in Wallingford. Boat trips on the Thames are available at Oxford and Henley, both again within easy travelling distance. It is a good overnight stop if travelling from the North of England to catch the Ferry from Portsmouth
We stayed overnight to attend a family party (in Marcham) so didn't really get to explore the area, however, on driving through, Abingdon looked lovely with streets of restaurants, cafes and plenty of shops - there looked to be a few passageways / cut throughs amongst them. The place where I stayed with my partner - The Brewery Tap - was lovely and I highly recommend here for a stay, drinks and food - based on the menu, it looked lovely, and the reviews, which are very good on TripAdvisor etc. I saw other pubs en-route - The Grapes was one, not sure what it is like as we drove past to get to our accommodation. I would like to return to walk round the area. My partner needed a belt and called into one of the charity shops - The Children's Air Ambulance - he said the lady was really friendly and chatty. We also got a taxi from the rank - this was near our accommodation and very handy.
We had our dog with us and (i) the hotel staff and set up couldnt have been friendlier or more welcoming. Made all the difference to our stay; and (ii) Abingdn is really a dog-friendly town. Lovely walk along the Thames and back via Abbey Gardens.
I only stayed one night which is enough to look round Abingdon but the river walk looked so inviting I would have like to stay another night so as to have had time to walk to Oxford and then take the bus back.
Abingdon is a lovely English town, with a fascinating past and an excellent centre for the Thames valley: it is close to, and larger than Dorchester, which is also highly recommended. The town has good pubs and restaurants and sits immediately adjacent to the Thames: its marina is only a short walk away along the towpath. On this occasion we didn't eat in Abingdon but in Oxford (only 20 minutes away by car), which as one might expect has plenty of attractions. It's perfectly possible to use Abingdon as a base and visit Oxford on a day trip. Abingdon't traffic leaves a little to be desired but is pretty easy to negotiate.
Historic buildings down by the Thames and nice walks by the river. Town centre is pretty dire and to be avoided (busy traffic and throughfares). But if you like a top quality curry then Abingdon has a good selection!
I stay here regularly as I travel to Oxford monthly for work. The staff could not be more friendly or professional if they tried! Always greeted with a warm welcome and the hotel itself and the bedrooms are spotlessly clean. The food in the restaurant is great! The amenities in the room are great! It’s sad but I really appreciate the iron and ironing board in the room… I always make use of it! Love staying here…. Beds are so comfy!
Second time we have stayed at Dinckley Court. Lovely accommodation. Annette the host is great and very helpful. Great spot for visiting Abingdon and Oxford. The view of the river from the bottom of the garden is fantastic. Visit you won't be disappointed.
Abingdon
This place could not have been more perfect. It was beyond spacious, homely and really close to the town center. We had a washer and dryer which was wonderful. It had great parking, two spaces which is hard to find in Abingdon.
Location excellent. Breakfast adequate. Was lovely to be able to walk into Abingdon in the evening, choice of restaurants good. Loved looking out over the garden and the river over breakfast.
