An interesting old port town. However, there is a limit to how long you can spend around there. But it is an ideal spot for touring the Solway cast nearby with an excellent local bust route on the axis Maryport, Workington, Whitehaven, Egremont with options to go further if you can sort timetables on the internet! Also well served by the Cumbrian Coast railway.
Maryport has a very sad but interesting history so its worth a walk to the quay to read the history and see the boats and the sea . Some interesting little shops on the way ,only 10 min walk from hotel or you can drive around the quay to the coast .Still a little fishing port .
Maryport was a stop over on a cycling tour. There isn't much to do in the town & sadly looks run down. Plenty of take aways & a choice of a pub or hotel for an evening meal. We settled on The Golden Lion hotel, which did huge portions though lacking in the vegetarian selection. As a stop over it was fine but wouldn't recommend as a holiday destination alas!
As is the case in most towns, car parking and local regulations eg the disc system in use in the town can catch out the first time visitor . Prior advice of the reg's when booking hotels etc. and perhaps issuing discs by hotels to guests for temporary use would ease this little annoyance Getting about is fairly easy
The Harbour area is both extensive and interesting. The coastal paths both north and south offer fine views and the opportunity to walk along the beach. If you like walking, Maryport if easy to get around,
Maryport was a lovely seaport town which had a promenade that was clean . The people were friendly and would greet you even if you were a stranger. That was nice. There were lots of places for long walks or for cycling.
A good size family room which was lovely and clean, the breakfast was good quality and contained a good variety, I didn't realize I had asked for something that wasn't included it the breakfast menu however it was provided so thank you, the staff were friendly overall a good base when visiting Maryport
