Lovely shore side appointment. Good choice of restaurants, bars and take -aways (even in the midst of coronavirus). Three world class whisky distilleries within walking distance. Good direct ferry access from the mainland
Apart from rough weather bringing loads of rubbish (it will probably get cleared up before summer) the beaches are great. If you stay in self catered you will find the local shops limited, the Spar has a deli with better choices but coop not great. Coop in Bowmore better. Whisky fans well catered for, lovely walk to 3 distilleries - Ardbeg great for lunch.
Great little town. Very picturesque and has a little bit of everything you might need. The Port Ellen Hotel has some great food options. Their butter spread for the bread and their whisky sauce are made in house and were the best I've ever experienced! They also have TONS of whiskies behind the bar, so it's a great place to get started in your education with Islay whisky.
You'll come for the Whisky but will also find yourself exploring. All the distilleries are great, our favourite was Laphroaig. We explored Oa one morning, walking up to the American Monument which was a beautiful small walk with stunning scenery and even glimpses of Ireland from the cliffs at the top. We were very lucky with the weather, which was mostly sunny with a bit of rain and cloud. Locals are very friendly and everything is driving, if not walking distance.
Nice relaxing area. Lovely walks to enjoy. Nice beach to stroll along. Lovely friendly local the Ardview we were made to feel really welcome. Fantastic bistro The SeaSalt Bistro a must to visit for lovely delicious food.
If you are not driving on the island, you need to arrange for a taxi before you fly maybe book it when you buy your ticket to Islay. There is also a bus. **Also, book reservations for a restaurant before you go or you will need to go to their co-op grocery store to buy items to eat in your room. Co-op was nice.
