Visit the Potteries - fabulous place to go!
This is actually a review of Stoke on Trent & area. I spent the night at The Crown in Stone, because I was advised that Stone was "nicer" than Stoke ... The Crown certainly wasn't - it was the grimest hole I've ever stayed in, but as I said in my review of it, the staff were pleasant ... And this is a constant theme. Everyone I talked to in the area were lovely, friendly people.
Had a meal at the Crown of India - again, staff very pleasant, nice atmosphere & good food.
Stoke on Trent has been hit hard by the decline of the potteries ... But there is an enormous amount to see and do there. Well worth visiting & they deserve to become a significant tourist destination. Highlights for me were the Spode visitor centre. These guys are struggling to get the venture up and running following the bancrupcy of Spode in 2008. This is a project really worth supporting. The Longport factory, home of Burleigh is an absolute must destination if you are at all interested in ceramics, and the City Museum & Art Gallery has a breathtaking collection worth the trip on its own.
