Travelers who stayed in Guatemala near La Aurora Airport (GUA) have said good things about Hostal Villa Toscana, L'Aurora Inn, and Hotel Don Felipe Aeropuerto.
Guatemala City can be overwhelming and the traffic is usually a nightmare. However, there are great restaurants and interesting sightseeing in the capital. The countryside views are hard to beat: lush vegetation; amazing volcanoes; spectacular highland lake (Atitlan); and colonial architecture. Amazing scenery but rural roads can be tricky. It is helpful to speak some Spanish if traveling in rural areas. There are some things I wish we didn't encounter, but they are par for the course in many Latin American countries: trash on some roadsides; lots of stray dogs; and narrow roads. It can be helpful if you know someone there who can answer questions and provide suggestions.
Guatemala is a beautiful country with friendly people. While I spent most of my time in the touristic area of Antigua and Lago Atitlan, there is so much to explore and see that I’m already planning my next trip. Make sure to sample the diverse food. I am not a shopper but there are lots of local markets for food and handicrafts, although, ironically, I’ve never seen so many things for sale that I had no interest in buying. I can appreciate the handiwork and skill but it’s just stuff I don’t need. But I ate crazy good food all over. Lovely people!
Antigua was as expected - full of Cathedrals and the ruins were fantastic. Getting around Antigua is best done by walking but remember that pedestrians DO NOT have any right of way - and the traffic is very heavy. The little shops are full of all kinds of Guatemalan trinkets, but you can bargain for a better price. We ate at the Bicicletade Juancho - a bakery, wine and liquor store combo and the host and the pastries were wonderful. Guatemala City traffic is better than Mexico's but like Mexcio, beware of the motorcyclists if you take the dare to drive yourself. The Mercados in Zona 1 at the Central Plaza were amazing - we ate at Rositas and the dishes were outstanding - not too spicy but full of flavors you need to experience. Snacks at El Portal along with Gallo beers have to be tried. Three days is too short to experience everything, so plan a longer trip of a week or more if possible.
I was there to meet friends but Guatemala is culturally rich with the largest indigenous population after Bolivia. The city itself has a great museum and Kaminaljuyu Archaeological site. It is not a good place for tourists. Antigua, the colonial capital is nearby and worth visiting. Then go to Atitlan the highlands and to the Peten and archaeological sites like Tikal. Guatemalan food is not great. They like McDonalds and pizza. The Chapin breakfasts offer local delicious beans but in general they are a fast food nation. Local traditional food is not inspiring. Coffee shops are good places for a sandwich. The coffee is delicious. They make it fresh but by a traditional extraction method so it is never bitter. Meat is served at every regular meal but is always tough as no beef is hung. Creature comforts like heating and easy chairs are not a high priority in homes.
Guatemala is a great country to visit, there is a diversity of good things to do, they have a nice pretty mall Oakland, zone 9 and zone 10 are spectacular and gastronomy at Casa Escobar is delicious, but there are many places to go to have good meals, as Montano's, Joselitos, Donde Michel, etc. Also, you can visit Aurora Zoo looking for a variety of animals in good habitat and if you have kids, you can also visit Mundo Petapa, super recommended.
Beggars everywhere on the street. Never saw a police patrol and there were a lot of sketchy people all over the place. You could feel like being robbed at any minute!. Not even Mexico city feels so insecure. Avoid this horrible place and visit other countries. I would never come back to this awful city.
Zona 1, Guatemala
We stayed two nights and days in this beautiful monumental B&B in zone 1 within walking distance of the most important sights that can be reached via a busy pedestrian promenade. Excellent breakfast and a shuttle service from or to the airport including a small sightseeing tour. Excellent mattress and English-speaking owner. Enjoyed two evenings on the terrace of the delightful and quiet city garden. We are happy that we have added Guatemala City to our Guatemala tour, highly recommended.
Zona 4, Guatemala
The place offer great value for the price and location in the city, can't be beated by any other accomodation right now. The breakfast was better than expected, the fresh fruit and pancakes were good. The place has just what is needed for the traveler to rest and keep your stuff safe in lockers. A big patio and parking space for a couple of vehicules. Christian and Alex from the staff are always willing to help. Thanks for the hosting during my stay of 5 days in Guatemala City.
I looked for a pet friendly hotel, this is what came up first. The master suite was very spacious, their facilities were clean and we were able to bring our dog. The staff was very friendly and they did a great job to make us feel welcomed. My family enjoyed the bathtub and the comfort of this place to the point that we decided to stay another day, This was a nice escape within the city, a nice detail was that the parking fee was given as a courtesy.
Front desk was very accommodating and ready to help me with my travel questions. They provide city tour advice and find you transportation. In my considerstion the place is not excellent but a good choise for the last one or two nights stay in Guatemala city. They pick you up and drop you to the airport complementary about 20 minutes considering trafic It is also walking distance worry free to many restaurants, malls and bars
Zona 10, Guatemala
The place is located in a good area of the city, inside a safe and quiet neighbourhood. The room is big, clean, includes a comfortable bed, hot water and new towels everyday. Outside the room, there is a salon, dining table and a fully equipped kitchen. The owners are very kind and friendly, they helped us with everything we needed during our stay. In conclusion - highly recommend for your time in Guatemala City.
Zona 13, Guatemala
The free airport pick up was fantastic and easy (you can access free Wi-Fi at the airport to call the hostel on whatsapp if you don't have a SIM card), staff were friendly and helpful and location near the airport was great. I would stay again on my way to or from Guatemala City airport. Beds And showers were also good for the price, and the library was a really lovely touch.
Zona 1, Guatemala
I stayed a week in this hotel. I was surprised by the perfect service provided. Very good breakfast, a clean room and above all the service from the owner, Giovanni. Nothing I asked was too much for him!! The hotel is only 5 minutes walking from the city center. I definetly will come back.
Zona 16, Guatemala
Excellent location. Short, safe walk to Cayala. Beautiful view overlooking Guatemala City. Wonderful host. Clean room stocked with everything needed for a stay. Secure complex. Quick access to uber, taxi, other public transportation. Absolutely would stay here again. Highly recommend.
Cosy, more like a boutique hotel. Friendly and helpfull staff. Good safety, own security guard, mobile gate for courtyard access, though the area around is safe (the financial area of the city). Courtesy transfer to and from the airport (15' ride).
Good breakfast, Good wifi. Staff are so friendly and professional. Always helpful and smiling. Tour desk was amazing. Facilities are excellent. Super location for both the city walks and the airport. Free shuttle to the airport was great.
The location is in Zone 4 which is safe to walk in the night, one of the coolest neighborhood's in Guatemala city. Super friendly staff and beautiful back porch common areas. Clean and absolutely pleasant stay. Really strong wifi!

Zona 13, Guatemala
The hotel is very close to the airport, so when a sleeping place is needed there it's perfect. I just would stay there for one night, if needed, but not for a good time in Guatemala City.
Location is good on Zona 10. Internet worked good. Free taxi to airport. Breakfast included. Works well for a pratical stay when arriving or departuring from Guatemala.
The location was so beautiful! Felt very safe and next to many shopping areas and restaurants, very modern for Guatemala City. Loved the roof top too!!
