Plitvice lived up to my expectations and more. Every view is different and beauty is around every corner. We had read about the trails being clogged with people in summer but we had the opposite experience in early Winter. There was almost no-one about and we could experience the lakes and waterfalls as if they were wilderness. The downside was that we were told at the gate that the upper lakes and some of the lower lakes were closed. The shuttle bus and ferries were only servicing the lower lakes. Luckily, brilliant sunshine highlighted the incredible colours of the park - white snow, azure water and green mosses - and melted the early morning ice from the trails. The lower lake trails were all open by midday. We also walked to an unmarked stair trail above the big waterfall on the Plitvice River. The upper lakes were still accessible by the road which offers great views from above. Although there was deep snow on some of the trails, the vast majority were safe and dry. People claim to have seen the whole park in a few hours (the park is very compact), but we took a day for the lower lakes and the same for the upper - retracing our steps often along the best trails and taking time to absorb the beauty. The weather deteriorated on both days to thick fog by mid- afternoon, so winter can be disappointing, but also super rewarding.
We visited in January when the lakes and waterfalls were frozen, a great sight and no crowds. It was difficult to get information before arriving. Hotel Jezero is located 2 minute walk to Entrance 2 where the boats on the main lake depart from. From here you can take the boat and then walk down through the lower lakes. a shuttle bus brings you back to entrance 2. or you can walk along the lake to the lower lakes. Allow 3-5 hours which depends on how much you linger at the falls. Entrance 1 is the main entrance you can operate the above in reverse or just visit the lower lakes. From entrance 2 you can take the boat to the paths on the upper falls but in our case the upper falls were closed due to the frozen paths. We did walk along the road and saw the upper falls but it was icy in places. I recommend 2 days to visit upper and lower falls but you can visit lower falls in a day.
You HAVE to visit Plitvice Lakes if you're visiting Croatia. They are SOOOO beautiful! It's 100% worth it to stay near the lakes instead of just coming for a day. A few reasons: you can avoid the crowds, you have plenty of time to wander around the park, and you don't have to panic about catching a bus on either end. Did I mention how beautifully empty the park is in the early morning? You could see pretty much all of the lakes with 1 full day, but I really enjoyed having a second day to explore more routes. It's impossible to get bored of the views. Really.
The place is beautiful and the park is well organized. However, I find it higly overpriced. I cannot see any justification for this, other than limiting a number of visitors, but this could be achieved by selling a limited number of tickets. Grand Canyon is much cheaper. There are a lot of beautiful national parks in Poland, where I come from, and they cost 2-4 euros, not 26 euros. Having travelled a bit around the world, and visited many national parks and other natural wonders (including Agua Azul in Mexico, similar to Croatian Lakes), I must say that Plitvice Lakes are definitely too expensive, even for their beauty. Plus there is practically no reasonable public transport from Zadar and if you want to spend a day there you need to rent a car.
The lakes are absolutely spectacular, truly a jewel in nature. I would recommend stout shoes or trainers because there is a lot of walking, whilst being a “tad” expensive it is understandable as the whole park is really unspoilt and human interaction/interference is at an absolute minimum, so the visitor can enjoy a truly magnificent natural experience. Go early and enjoy a full day.
There are many things to be said and all from positive perspective. But it is hard to enclose all in a short comment so I'll say only this: Plitvice National Park is amazing. Do not hesitate to visit it! 100% worth. And reserve a full day for this!
We arrived late night, and it was quite easy to locate with the GPS. The staff gave a good overview of the hotel and its facilities. Though the hotel is right smacked outside entrance 2 of Plitvice, its not crowded nor noisy. Readly ideal if you like to reach the park at its opening hours 7am to beat the crowds. Rooms are huge and spacious, clean and comfortable, very conducive for watching the world cup. Breakfast selection was pretty wide, love the eggs and crepes. Dinner at the restaurant was buffet style, with a wide selection too.
Blazenka our host was delightful and soo helpful. She went beyond our expectations. Blazenka dropped us and collected us from the local restaurant. The accommodation was about a 15 minute walk to the bus station. We arrived at Plitvice Lakes and spent the full day then caught a taxi only 5 minutes to our accommodation. Rastoke was a 20 minute bus ride and well worth it. So overall Blazenka offers a great location for sightseeing. Thankyou soo much to our host. A great ambassador for Croatia.
This accommodation is comfortable and spacious on a quiet side street. The house and surrounding gardens are clean and adorable, the host is so lovely and welcoming (even helping us out when we didn’t have a ride) and the breakfast was delicious and affordable. A quick taxi ride to Plitvice Lakes park (~60 kuna). Wish we could have stayed longer!
We stayed in the apartment at the Guesthouse which has a balcony, and was really comfortable and homely for our visit. It had everything we needed, spotlessly clean and is in a great location to walk to the Plitvice Lakes. We really enjoyed our stay here and was one of the real highlights of our trip to Croatia!
Illia and his wife went out of their way to make our stay one of the best I have experienced in Croatia. The breakfast they provided was superb and provided sustenance for the whole day. He also provide lifts to and from the Plitvice lakes for free. Fantastic 5 star stay
The stuff are friendly&helpful. It's really convenience to stay in the plitvice lake hotel. It's easy to get to the national park& you buy one day ticket that could be up to 2 days if u stay in the hotel. It's really worthy.
The dinner and breakfast were amazing, some of the best food we had in Croatia! The place was just a few minutes from plitvice lakes, and the host was able to give us good advice on what we should see and do.

Clean room, beautiful little town, 30 minute walk to Plitvice Lakes. Nice breakfast.
The camping is a convenient 5 mins drive from Plitvice. We stayed in their premium mobile homes which are unexpectedly well equipped, clean and spacious. The camping grounds have all the facilities you could need. The staff are friendly and speak English. Food at the camping’s restaurant is great, especially after a tiring day of visiting Plitvice.
Guest House Plitvicka was a very pretty and very clean hotel. The lady who ran the hotel was especially sweet.
