You HAVE to visit Plitvice Lakes if you're visiting Croatia. They are SOOOO beautiful! It's 100% worth it to stay near the lakes instead of just coming for a day. A few reasons: you can avoid the crowds, you have plenty of time to wander around the park, and you don't have to panic about catching a bus on either end. Did I mention how beautifully empty the park is in the early morning? You could see pretty much all of the lakes with 1 full day, but I really enjoyed having a second day to explore more routes. It's impossible to get bored of the views. Really.
The place is beautiful and the park is well organized. However, I find it higly overpriced. I cannot see any justification for this, other than limiting a number of visitors, but this could be achieved by selling a limited number of tickets. Grand Canyon is much cheaper. There are a lot of beautiful national parks in Poland, where I come from, and they cost 2-4 euros, not 26 euros. Having travelled a bit around the world, and visited many national parks and other natural wonders (including Agua Azul in Mexico, similar to Croatian Lakes), I must say that Plitvice Lakes are definitely too expensive, even for their beauty. Plus there is practically no reasonable public transport from Zadar and if you want to spend a day there you need to rent a car.
The lakes are absolutely spectacular, truly a jewel in nature. I would recommend stout shoes or trainers because there is a lot of walking, whilst being a “tad” expensive it is understandable as the whole park is really unspoilt and human interaction/interference is at an absolute minimum, so the visitor can enjoy a truly magnificent natural experience. Go early and enjoy a full day.
There are many things to be said and all from positive perspective. But it is hard to enclose all in a short comment so I'll say only this: Plitvice National Park is amazing. Do not hesitate to visit it! 100% worth. And reserve a full day for this!
The trek around the lakes takes a full day if you don't want to hurry and want to enjoy it fully so plan your time accordingly. We made it a half day trek but we saw roughly 2/3 of the area. It is definitely a place worth seeing
During the summer this park is too crowded and very expensive. I recommend to travel in the beginning of spring, when the weather is just starting to be warm - the best time I would say is the end of March. We were there in March and it was calm and quiet and so clean, we only met a few people.

One of the most amazing places I stayed in all of my trips! The apartment was so comfortable and the host Marija was super nice. I had to book the accommodation really last minute and she answered the phone and met me in such a short notice. Amazing! The kitchen was complete! The apartment was so clean. The wifi was great. The location was amazing, in front of the supermarket, and very close to the park entrance 2. It was great to have a door to the back of the building, with a nice view.

Super clean and cosy with excellent facilties and comfortable beds. The host is very kind, we appreciated the fruit bowl left for us. The location (village of Mukinja) is very useful for people who want to access entry number 2 of the plitvice national park which is only a pleasant, forested 10-15 minute from the property. Highly recommend this place as a launching pad to see the stunning plitvice area. Perfect for families with 1-2 kids.
