Colonial Town & Shopping Paradise
With a cooler climate than other cities on the Java Island, Bandung is located at an altitude of 768 metres, surrounded by tea plantations and the Parahyangan Mountains. This lush paradise was once a chic retreat for European colonialists and plantation owners, and still keeps some of its famous legacy.
During the 17th and 18th centuries, the Dutch East Indies Company (VOC) established several plantations and built a road linking to the capital, becoming the base for future expansions. At the beginning of the 20th century, chic restaurants, trendy boutiques, and luxurious Art Deco hotels helped Bandung to build the reputation of a ‘Paris of Java’.
Even though World War II stopped the Dutch attempt to move the colonial capital to Bandung, buildings like the magnificent ‘Gedung Sate’ remain witnesses of such enterprise. Other must-see landmarks are the ‘Gedung Merdeka’ and the Bandung Institut of Technology. Jalan Asia-Afrika street is still one of the main roads, and remains a popular area to find hotels in Bandung. The shopping areas are still a magnet for tourists, and many hotels, apartments and inns can be found here.

The traffic was absolutely appalling. Admittedly we were there for the last weekend of the school holidays, + one extra. However, 2 hours to go 8.2 kilometres drove us nuts - and that was one of the better trips. Try 5 and a half hours to go 44 kilometres - and there was a LOT of time spent stationary. If you have a choice, don't come here - and definitely don't come during school holidays or on a weekend. We went to both Kawah Putih and Tangkuban Perahu (different days). They were worth seeing - but only if you can avoid Bandung traffic.

Bandung used to be shopping haven but now not so. Culinary and food is the trend now. If shopping is your main reason to go to bandung then you might get disappointed. However if you are there for Nature, highland and family’s adventure, then very good place to go. We spent most of our time outside bandung city. A city I think that is over looked and should be explored, It has a cool vibe with laid back people who are very welcoming. The city has lots to offer with many markets, residents and bars. But to really explore Bandung you must get out and see the mountains which surround the city, go north to wander around the forests which are filled with tours, also go to the Tea fields and then drive to the top of the mountain to see the inside of a volcano. Then go south and see white crater were you can take amazing photos, you can also relax in the thermal hot pools.

To Bandung for the second time (first visit almost a decade ago). In short, it can describe today's Bandung, KOTOR. Garbage is strewn everywhere (especially in suburban areas), flies are flying everywhere, unpleasant odors can be found at almost every red light intersection, and most importantly food is less hygienic. Looking at the history of the city of Bandung, which has existed for quite a long time in Indonesia, the government (region, city in particular) should be able to create a healthy living environment. Hopefully on our next visit we can enjoy the city of Bandung which is BIP (Bersih, Indah, Paten)
