Colonial Town & Shopping Paradise
With a cooler climate than other cities on the Java Island, Bandung is located at an altitude of 768 metres, surrounded by tea plantations and the Parahyangan Mountains. This lush paradise was once a chic retreat for European colonialists and plantation owners, and still keeps some of its famous legacy.
During the 17th and 18th centuries, the Dutch East Indies Company (VOC) established several plantations and built a road linking to the capital, becoming the base for future expansions. At the beginning of the 20th century, chic restaurants, trendy boutiques, and luxurious Art Deco hotels helped Bandung to build the reputation of a ‘Paris of Java’.
Even though World War II stopped the Dutch attempt to move the colonial capital to Bandung, buildings like the magnificent ‘Gedung Sate’ remain witnesses of such enterprise. Other must-see landmarks are the ‘Gedung Merdeka’ and the Bandung Institut of Technology.
