Yakushima is a Japanese island with many more attractions than most others. Although small, it is very hilly, so unless you're a steely cycling maniac, you really need a car. There is forest hiking for all levels of ability, great museums, gardens, some awesome waterfalls, and you'll even encounter families of monkeys in the middle of the road busy grooming each other, and maybe a deer or two, as well! This ruggedly mountainous island is full of stunning scenery - although if you're a photographer, it's an advantage if you're also a steely cycling maniac, because that's the easiest way to stop when you like on the very narrow roads, when it would be dangerous to do so if driving. The people are are universally laid-back and friendly - we couldn't have been made to feel more welcome. We've visited lots of small Japanese islands, and this is probably our favorite to date.
A great place to visit for nature and hiking fans. As a beginner, the trails were fairly doable. We hired a car for our stay so travelling around the island was easy. I did see a lot of schedules around town for the busses so I assume there is a good bus network going for those who won't be hiring a car. My favourite place from our visit was definitely Yakusugi land because I saw some of the most beautiful scenery that I've ever seen.
If you want an unspoilt, natural, unpolluted place and love to hike then this is the place for you. If you are looking for entertainment then stay on the mainland. Magical ancient forests, stunning waterfalls, crystal clear spring water, the freshest air, hot spring baths in the sea , stars so big and clear that you can almost touch them....... There is Yakushima time and everyone is laid back and friendly but nothing else but good clean healthy fun !
What a beautiful place - I wish we could have stayed longer than one night in this mysteriously gorgeous place. Even though it rained during our trip, it didn't take away from the beauty of the nature and amazing greenery. If you go, PLEASE stay at least two days. Also, a car is a MUST.
Good food, wonderful nature, interesting environment (mountains, hot spring, ocean and view) and people are very friendly. I recommend you to communicate with locals (I mean ACTUAL locals when they are not on the sightseeing duty) at bar, at supermarket, on the beach and local hot springs. Pls donate some money if you visit the mountain area, your 500 or 1000JPY help they keep the sites. Great time!!!
After the first week New Year in January, expect that most of the shops or restaurants are closed due to low season, therefore, supermarkets are opened 7 days a week and closing between 9~10pm depending on the location. If you're looking for quiet and nature place to go, Yakushima during that time is perfect. You can see monkeys in the forests.
