Located in Mérida, Monkeys Island Ometepe has a private beach area, garden and free WiFi. Featuring a 24-hour front desk, this property also provides guests with a terrace. We had an amazing stay at Monkey House. From the moment we arrived Berlin made us feel at home, and helped us with all our small things. There is a beautiful private beach, and monkey island is a five minute Kayak trip away, which you can rent for good value! We brought bananas and two monkeys came onto the Kayaks! Scary but fun. The room was perfect, nice bed and fan nothing too fancy but for the price it was perfect. People say the road is terrible, but its not too bad at all. From Moyogalpa its paved road all the way up until the last twenty minutes. We rented a scooter and it was easy, 15 minutes to San Ramon waterfall (amazing well worth it) and 20 to Santa Domingo, Ojo De Agua, etc. The food is so so good. The free breakfast has a good variety and big plates, and we had dinner there each night which was good value (4.5$) and really good. The highlight was meeting the family that run the hostel, playing Uno every night and making new friends! Big thanks to Berlin, Ervin and Brenda for making it a great visit see you soon!
Offering year-round outdoor pool and terrace, Hotel La Omaja is located in Mérida in the Rivas Region Region, 25 mi from San Juan del Sur. Guests can enjoy the on-site restaurant. La omaja was even better than the pictures suggested! The sunset over the pool was worth the entire trip. It was picturesque and perfect. The staff (Byron and hora) were extremely helpful and friendly, even keeping the bar open for our group. They helped us set up our next accommodations and even called our hotels for us when we had an issue. The food was delicious but we also found a cute restaurant down the road that allowed us to take full advantage of the island. Highlights: Massage on the patio of our Cottage/room The infinity pool view (spectacular) The cocktails and the staff The trip to the lagoon
Some Main roads ok with multiple massive speed bumps., our car scraped every time! Really need a 4x4 to get to any of the sites (and half the island) as most of the roads are very poor , dirt with large risk s and ruts. The other option is to pay for shuttles. Typical Nicaraguan culture. Some of the island is very isolated.
Ometepe Island is not a place that caters to tourists and is not overly Westernized, so don't come expecting that. It is rural, rustic and amazingly beautiful. The people are helpful and friendly, we did not have any problems; although at least basic Spanish is a must. Set your expectations on enjoying Nicaraguan culture and beauty and you will not be disappointed. Riding around the Island on a motorcycle with the volcanoes looming in the background is awe inspiring. Lake Nicaragua, the trees, flowers, butterflies, birds and monkeys are all so lovely. Kick back, slow down, breath deep, rest awhile, climb in a hammock, embrace it all and you will love it. Eat at Cafe Campestre and stay at Casa del Bosque both in Balgue; stay at Punte Resort at Punte de Jesus Maria. Rent a motorcycle. Stop on the side of the road and look in the trees, you will find monkeys. Visit all the recommended spots, it won't take long, but go early cause it gets hot fast!
Awesome island in middle of Lake Nicaragua! We spent six weeks in Nicaragua and sadly only 3 nights on Ometepe, which was our favorite place. The island is very tropical and humid compared to the rest of what we saw in the country, and nice and cool at night. Also, the culture is still very much in place there and you can almost imagine how it has been for thousands of years. The views of the volcanoes are awesome too. We plan to go back someday and see what we missed because there is a lot to see!
