A great alternative to Amsterdam surrounded by green areas and lakes easily accessible by bike. Groningen is a fantastic Dutch city with plenty to do, a historic city center and a young vibe due to the university and the big student population. I lived there for 2 years and loved it!
It's a university town so it was full of students about to start term. The people of Groningen are very friendly and this really enhances the experience. I wouldn't say there's a lot to explore culturally as it's quite a small town, but the canals and the streets in the centre add a lot of charm. It's a kind of place to go if you just want to get away from big city life as it's quite laid back
None of us had the feeling we are in the Netherlands, but sort of a mini London with ugly concrete buildings. Also, the city center is fairly small, if you want to walk around, you can calculate with a few hours. I missed greatly trees and parks in general. Princenhof was pretty, and we had nice meals during our trip.
Beautiful city full of friendly people, who can switch to English in a heartbeat, if you don't speak the language, lots of modern and old architecture, pubs and restaurants, City is very easy to navigate, best to do on foot or bike, I recommend visiting the Forum building, excellent, I cannot wait to go back
A decent enough city, nothing special, especially compared to other Dutch cities. I found out later that the town center was destroyed in the World War II, which explains the eclectic features of the main square. The only thing that I really loved were the Martinitoren chimes, it is worthwhile to go to the little park behind it and listen to these most enchanting chimes! I also had a problem as a vegan since there are no vegan restaurants. In fact, my google maps lead me to a restaurant that was supposedly vegan, only to find out (once I made myself comfortable at a table) that it was a meat/fish restaurant with nothing to offer me... Uhhhh
Lovely city, great for a mini break, some cultural highlights include the Groninger museum and the Forum. Lots of nice boutique shops, a good selection of restaurants and both modern and traditional bars.
Groningen
Marion and Willem were excellent hosts, they were waiting for us when we arrived and explained how everything worked. They were always available for any questions we had and had no problem helping out with impromptu requests. The house was amazing, it was very well designed and had a lovely ambiance. There are multiple saunas you can enjoy, also a hot-tub, a jacuzzi and a pool, all private and inside the property, making it a relaxation heaven. Breakfast was super! Very abundant and varied. We also had dinner and it was very delicious and very nicely prepared. All in all it was a very lovely stay!

Everything. Despite the strange times, the hotel was incredibly hospitable and welcoming. It was a great place to propose to my partner and they made it extra special.
