Simplon Jongerenhotel offers basic accommodations including a courtyard garden with barbecue facilities. It is just 0.6 mi away from the lively Groningen center city.
Simplon Hostel is one of the sweetest, most endearing places to stay for a couple of nights that I know of – anywhere in the world. It is situated very near to Groningen's city centre, at the back of an inner courtyard, which brings peaceful nights – no traffic noises – and a spacious terrace, so you can sit outside whenever the weather allows – and also when it rains, because part of it is roofed. Apart from bunk beds they have a few separate rooms, all furnished with two single beds and a table to work at. Breakfast is simple but totally adequate, for a little extra money you can have a good quality espresso or cappuccino, and beers and wines as well. The public indoor spaces are cosy and well laid out, and the staff is simply wonderful. And all that for € 60 per night (bunk beds are about € 20): what more could a human being possibly want?

From the moment we arrived until the very last minute we were treated with unprecedented pampering. Elisa was there from beginning to end and along with her manager, the hotel made our short stay for a friend's wedding at a heatwave season a wonderfully pleasant time! Not only the quality of the facilities (breakfast specially) was great, but also the kindness and understanding in accommodating our needs when we arrived before the check-in and needed a place to get changed for the wedding was such a nice treat. They also have a conveniently placed charging station for electric vehicles. We were offered discounts and simpler processes left and right, and without even asking. We have never seen such a welcoming service. We are certainly coming back!

Very fine and knowledgeable people (got some very interesting insights into the relation between the shape of beer glases and beers) working in a fine hotel located at a fine place (central market, can't miss it) with some of the most interesting decor. Great breakfast and service. Free coffee all day. Definitely highly recommended.

Tucked away near the German border in the north-eastern corner of the Netherlands, Groningen uses its isolated position to forge its own distinct character. The young student population attending the 17th-century University of Groningen complements the historic architecture and famous Dutch canals.
The skyline is dominated by the magnificent Martinitoren (Martini Tower) that overlooks the Grote Markt (Main Square). Many buildings showcase Groningen’s merchant history and the centre features regular food markets such as the Vismarkt and Grote Markt.
Groninger Museum has one of the finest modern art exhibitions in Northern Europe and Oosterpoort plays host to cultural events from around the world. Students play a role in defining modern Groningen, giving this city a reputation for a vibrant nightlife.
Booking.com has a selection of hotels and apartments within its compact city centre. Grab a bike and discover this delightful and dynamic city for yourself.
Most everyone we encountered in the Netherlands spoke English. However, in Groningen, we were met with outright hostility and a dismissive hand wave when we stated we didn't speak Dutch. We did not find the majority of the people friendly.
Charming , vibrant old city for walking tours, biking, and street cafes. Loved the canals and various bridges. Enjoyed the pancake ship. Excellent bus and train transportation. Many places accept Visa cards but some use debit cards only.
I went to Groningen especially to visit the Forum building. It did not disappoint. An extraordinary design it is composed of all facilities to enhance your stay. Cinemas, library, great information, vg tourist information and shop, excellent cafe (indoors and out). Great walk up the Martini Church Tower in tiny spiral staircase made entirely from bricks to different levels. One showing off the huge bells and another higher provided a terrific lookout to view the city. I did not get to the top. Walked the tour of the former alms houses which took me all over the city including the park. The university and the mass of parked bikes was a good photo op. Everywhere there are great cafes and the canals have good bars for evening sitting out.
Nice and cosy traditional Dutch city, very friendly and safe, even in the night. Lots of students and parties going on. Lots of places to eat and a bit less expensive than the major Dutch cities. Easy and safe to get around.
Very nice city - good vibe, lot of cyclists, ‘slow pace’, very atmospheric. The Forum building (and its rooftop) are a must - this is what libraries should like today. Multifunctional, a place to work, read, have a nice coffee… And exceptional architecture. The rooftop provides great views over the city and surrounding area.
I fell in love with this city! I was blown away by The Forum! We went back a second time to see more. If we'd had time, I would've liked to go back at night to see the stars and the city at night, particularly the Martini Tourin. I think it's beautiful! And so are the other churches. We ate at pubs and like to have desserts in different places than dinner so we can walk a bit in between, so we had desserts in lots of different types of places. Sometimes at fancy restaurants, and sometimes at bakeries we could find still open, once we had dessert on a rooftop terrace. We walked almost everywhere in Groningen, but driving was easy. I think the next time we will go in the early fall and hope for less wind and rain. It was quite cold and windy for April.
