We went on some awesome dog walks; thermal pools were brilliant; star gazing night tour was informative and well worth the money. Delicious burgers from Our Dog Friday and the service was friendly. Just a shame our accommodation was second rate. There needs to be more choices for dog friendly accommodation that isn’t sub standard.
Wonderful views- we went for the Night Sky viewing but were too late to book any tours. We saw the awesome sky from our room -it truly is a splendour. We ate at a local restaurant -good value for money and a lovely meal. Lack of time meant we missed the Chapel ,hot pools and Night Sky tours.
Lake Tekapo is very beautiful and worthy of a two night stay - I don't feel you need any more time there if you are on a trip around the South Island as there is not an awful lot to do unless you just want to chill. Once you've seen the lake, famous church and dog statue, gazed at the stars and walked or driven up Mt John for the amazing view there is not a lot else to do really, although there are hot pools and ice skating and more walks on offer. There are other lakes you can drive to that are not far away and Mt Cook is probably a 90 min drive away if you want a day out and have time to fit in the incredible 5km Hooker Valley Track.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay but one or two of the restaurants need to smarten up their service. One in particular was appalling. It was very cold, in fact the waitress wore an overcoat while serving. She couldn't understand what we were wanting to order. No one came to see if we wanted more drinks or another course after the first one was given. We waited 40 mins and then went up and asked for a desert menu, which was grudgingly given and then another long wait before it was delivered.
I did the Dark Skies Project experience and the Mt John Observatory Night Summit trip. Well worth it. Dark Skies also has a diner open now which did a bar menu on the evening I did the Summit experience. Food was great there. I found Tekapo at present difficult to find evening eating places open on a Wednesday. Eventually went Japanese as I wanted something light and not too expensive. I had Beef Tataki -picture below. The supermarket does sell prepackaged food and salads. I didn't realise that till the next day so that was lunch. The Tekapo Hot Springs has a steep walk up which again I didn't realise. It was a stop and start to be able to get up there but worth it once there.
We had anticipated going to the top of Mt. John to have al look at the observatory, enjoy the view and have a coffee. However, on arrival at the entrance to the climb up to the site we found the access barred by a gate and a notice stating that access was only open Thursday-Sunday as was the Dark Sky attraction in the village. It would have been useful to have learnt of the closure to the mountain prior to arriving at the access gate. If the area is crying out for visitors perhaps they could open up the major attractions on a more friendly visitor basis.
As soon as we arrived in our car we were greeted by the most welcoming owners. They helped us with parking the car in the best position, showed us around, explained the facilities and asked us about breakfast. The bed was the comfiest I’ve ever slept in and had an amazing sleep. You can walk to the restaurants from the property and you have a great view of the lake. We were provided a full cooked breakfast which was delicious and it was so nice to chat with the owners and other travelers. The owners even helped us with drying out or tent from hiking, we honestly couldn’t believe the hospitality. We would definitely stay again and highly recommend!
The owners greeted us in a welcoming friendly manner and showed us the guest areas of the lodge. The lodge is purpose built, with one side being the owners living area and the other, guest rooms and lounge. Both areas are joined by a central dining area. As guests we loved the friendly conversation, artwork, books, magazines and garden as well as access to a variety of drinks after a long journey. It was a highlight of our holiday in the South Island of New Zealand.
Very nice cabin, clean tidy and the double bed was huge and comfortable. Very appreciated after a long day hiking. Shared communal facilities very close by. Excellent spot to visit hot springs from and walk back to bed. Was lucky to see sunset reflection, which was very impressive. The staff was very helpful and it was quiet at night. We loved the location of the property. Comfortable bed, quiet ambience, helpful staff. Our view of the beautiful starlit nights from our balcony were a joy to behold. We walked along the lakeside one day and then up Mount John, and back. Exhilarating walk. Beautiful lake. Three nights was not long enough.
Lovely peaceful outlook to the lake and Church of the Good Shepherd & within walking distance of shopping area. Very roomy with good heating in every room. Enjoyed the upstairs fire! Not new but so perfect for us so rated 10/10. Lots of off street parking
