About Santana

Nestled in the northern region of Madeira, Portugal, Santana is a charming village known for its unique triangular houses. The climate here is subtropical, with temperatures averaging 70°F in the summer and 55°F in the winter.

Santana is a paradise for nature lovers. The village is a gateway to the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, featuring stunning walking trails. The iconic thatched-roof houses, known as "Casas de Colmo," are a must-see. While there's no local transport, the village is compact and easily explored on foot.

The culture of Santana is deeply rooted in its agricultural heritage. The local cuisine reflects this, with dishes like "Espetada" (skewered beef) and "Bolo do Caco" (a traditional flatbread). The surrounding region is rich in natural beauty, from the lush Laurissilva Forest to the dramatic cliffs of Cabo Girão.

    The hotel is very pleasant.

The hotel is very pleasant. It is good to be together with nature and with beautiful views over the sea and mountains. However, check-in took a long time, we waited 1 hour and a half for them to prepare the room, and when we got to the room, there were no pool towels, we had to ask at reception. Another situation that I didn't like was the booking of the wine tasting and visit to wine house. We were refused the wine tasting because we had already checked out at 12:00h. So we asked if we could do it before check out and they said yes, but we got there and nobody showed up.

Don't stay in Santana longer than 4 days and make sure you have a rental car to get to all the levadas easily. The restaurants/cafes in Santana are not that good/nice. The only tourist attraction in Santana are the famous Santana houses and the nearby hiking area Queimadas.

We made the mistake of not hiring a car before we got to the hotel. We figured we would see what Santana was like and then hire a car locally, this was a big mistake! Once we got to our hotel, it was clear that we would need a car to get around as nothing is close or easy to get to. We're super active people but local hikes are 30 mins just to get to. We were told it would be £630 to hire a car for 5 days. Our advice would be to hire a car ahead of your trip. Santana is beautiful and has such a variety of things to do and see. Other advice would be to not judge a book by its cover when it comes to restaurants, we ate the best stake in a tiny little restaurant that looked pretty grim from outside. You probably wont want to spend all your time in Santana but its a great base.

It is a lovely, peaceful and relaxing place. I wanted time to chill, and Santana did that. Lovely scenery. Eat at the Serra e Mar Don't bother with the tourists traditional houses, there are plenty of genuine ones in the town, some very rustic

We love Santana in the winter.

We love Santana in the winter. The tourists are all in Funchal, so you have the place for yourself. Santana is ideally placed for the best hikes in Madeira: Pico Ruivo (at least 3 different hikes start here, all top-class), Queimadas with its amazing hikes and others. Also a short drive to the airport. There are some great restaurants in Santana and the adjoining villages and all the services you may need.

I spent most of the day on the mountains, so I was only in Santana for a couple of hours. The people were friendly and inviting. Really felt welcomed there. While there's not much to do in the city, its location to some wonderful mountain tracks makes it a great base to go exploring and walking.

Hotel has a super location. There is enough parking on the property and restaurants are close by. Supermarket is 5min drive from the hotel. The grounds are amazing and from the general terrace which everyone has access to you can see the sea. The room had the perfect size and we still had enough space with 2 big luggages. The breakfast was good. We thought it would have been nice to offer some vegegable like tomatoes or slices cucumber. Otherwise there is a guest fridge where you can leave your stuff and a kitchen to prepare food.

The apartment was perfect for my family 2 adults and 2 kids. We had everything we needed. The location is easy to find and the communication with the host was perfect. Having the opportunity for self check-in was very important as we arrived late in the evening. The supermarket is in the way to the apartment in Santana. Car rental is needed and parking place is available. It is situated in the middle of nature. From the location we drove between 30 min-1h:30 min to the important places of the island.

the hotel is in an amazing location, in the middle of vineyards, ocean view and a beautiful flower garden, near the town of Santana. The hotel has a lot of rules that can be a bit annoying. It is necessary to choose breakfast period for tomorrow, it is necessary to make an order for dinner in their restaurant, as well as for pizza. Everything is kind of quite conservative, so we didn't feel free. The staff is otherwise very polite. Hotel very clean. The ambience is exceptional.

What an incredible value! The apartment is roomy and with views over the mountains. We stayed in apartment A which was the bottom apartment and it still had amazing views. The apartment was absolutely spotless and plenty of linens were provided as well as a fully equipped kitchen and laundry facilities. It is within walking distance to the town, as most things are in Santana, and the host was quick to respond and flexible with check out--much appreciated!

The House is very spacious with beautiful view on mountains. It has its own parking spot for those who came by car. It has equipped kitchen and washing mashine. The owner was super nice and we want to thank Maria for letting us come earlier because we had wedding. It has AC and the cleaning was very good. The check in and check out was superb and quick. The location is also good because you have few minutes to Santana centre.

Very comfortable and spacious accommodation in the village part of Santana. Big living room with fire, large terrace, fully equipped kitchen, two full-sized bedrooms. Two kilometers to Santana center. Very good base for Ruivo ridge and south-east part of Madeira trips (Porto da Cruz, Machico, Canical, Ribeiro Frio are within 30 minutes by car).

The room was very comfortable and spacious, especially the bathroom. Nice decoration. Common area (kitchen & living room) was also convenient and well equipped. Beautiful surroundings, levada walk next door. :) I believe the restaurant belongs to the owners, make sure to have a reservation as it can get quite crowded during dinner time.

Everything about the suite was fantastic. Wish every hotel was this well thought out and functional. Great view, great shower, great kitchenette, great cat. Thank you for having the heat on, nights were still chilly, and not everyplace in Madeira did!

Our favorite place on the island. Welcoming, peaceful and tucked away right behind the beautiful city center of Santana. This is what staying on Madeira should feel like. And let us not forget the welcoming and friendly people that run this place.

The house is very spacious, the interior is rustic but charming and the garden is beautiful. It's a great starting place for levada walks, going to santana, or for driving up to pico ruvio. 4+ people can easily stay there.
