A very bad experience of theft in my money from my Room and no concern or care by the Managers or the Owner who confirmed he had no time! Résidence De La Porte Du Millenaire Change your style and do serious business with professional managers.
First time in sub Saharan Africa. Dakar is a great introduction. Gorrée Island was amazing. The city is relatively compact and easy to walk around much of it. Good selection of cafés, restaurants, shops, supermarkets. Lovely coastline.
What a fabulous city, where the streets are brimming with activity, the markets are gorgeous, the people are friendly and warm, and the food is delicious. My traveling companion and I were fortunate to have local friends who made sure we got off the beaten tourist path, but I suspect that even the beaten tourist path there is remarkable. The only downside of our week in Dakar was that some of the merchants on Goree Island were much too persistent. If you're shopping on Goree Island, I recommend you buy from people who live on the island. The quality seemed better and the local merchants seemed more relaxed than the outsiders who travel there to sell.
I have rather mixed feelings about my stay in Dakar. On the one hand, I'd been living two months in Abidjan, Ivory Coast, and was in Senegal on vacation and so Dakar didn't really feel like a change of pace at all. I also chose an accommodation that was far from the main sights, which is my own fault, but also affected my enjoyment. I will say this: taxis and taxi drivers in Dakar are absolute fun vampires, they feed off joy and contentment and leave you feeling frustrated and annoyed. I did, however, love my visit to the fishermen villages along the western coast of the peninsula. I met a man there who showed me around and packed about a week's worth of experiences into a single day. This was fantastic but more praise for this man and his community than it is for Dakar as a destination. Also note that, if this is your first time in West Africa, it is not a cheap region for travel, and Senegal is more expensive than many of its neighbors; whatever your budget, raise it before you go. That said, Senegal is fairly accessible, with plenty to see and do.
I had read much about the commuter train from the airport only to find out it was not yet operational. Public transportation was a disappointment. I found the people friendly and helpful, the food tasty and delicious, but not very many ammenities at hotels, eg. a variety of tours, info about places to see, what to do. I visitedn the slave house on Goree island but it ws not advertised at the hotels. Had I not already read about it I would not have known.
A very lovely city with a network of streets on which you can find the most interesting things to buy. I love the architecture - mix of old and new. There's also an energy about the place. There are lots of good places to eat but Restaurant Chez Lucia is the place for local cuisine!!!
Dakar
I totally loved the place - the room and bathroom were excellent, clean and calm. Big plus was a garden and a balcony guests can use at all times. The family, owners of the house, are great, sympathetic, helpful and made my stay extremely pleasant. Breakfasts are tasty, fresh, eaten in the garden, make a wonderful beginning of the day. I'm really thankful to the owners for making my stay in Senegal so warm and pleasant.
Dakar
I arrived at 5am the morning after my check in date because of a delayed flight. The manager and a staff person met me with a smile helped me with my luggage and left me alone till I came down after a few hours sleep. I saw lunch, which look and was reportedly delicious. The manager helped me arranged. A spontaneous tour of Dakar before I left later that day. Exceptionally service for the price. I'll return.
Dakar
Hotel staff helps with all you need: taxi, money changing, drinks etc. F.e. we wanted to go to the south of Senegal, they arranged a reliable driver and lots of useful info. English is very good(no Dutch:-(...) and Mme Ruth is native german speaking. Rooms are not new, but shower and beds are good. Location is not central, but close enough: between 4 and 10 euro, taxi takes you everywhere in town.
The hotel itself is in need of renovation but the staff and location make it a charming place that radiates with hospitality, community, and care. The view from the balcony across the sea, pool, and coconut trees was a delight to wake up to every morning. Also great location for running along the Petit Corniche. Great restaurants and cafes nearby.
The breakfast was basic but good. If you are in Senegal, expect lots of fresh bread. Breakfast on the roof top was great. I love the greens everywhere especially plants in special pots. It is a very quiet place, secluded, nice if you have work to do. The staff are very friendly and helpful with catching taxis as our french is 'petit'
The property has a lot of space. The living room and kitchen are great. The owners are very friendly and they do their best make you feel at home. There are plenty a little shops and a very good bakery in front of the property. The property is located not far from the main road to Dakar and Rufisque.
The Cabane is sited directly on the beach, in fornt of the Isle of Ngor and only 15 minutes from Dakar city center. 5 minutes to the Monument and the Phare. The place was clean and hosts are really nice.
Location at Almadies was good. Near the beach and many hotels. Also very calm area. The wifi was quite good and you could even stram videos. Bed was comfortable and airco worked perfectly.
Great place always. Best hotel.in Dakar in my opinion. Excellent food. Great ambience and view. Staff very friendly and helpful
While expensive but European standards, I don't think you'll get a better hotel for your money in Dakar.
