A nice and interesting town for one-day visit (it could be two day), a magnificent castle/fortress on the top of the hill (you can drive almost to the top), nice and lively main street/square, which is closed for traffic. Most of the shops are open on Sunday (till mid-afternoon), very good local food and drinks. Despite some obvious poverty people are nice and friendly, no agressive beggars. The only drawback (at least for drivers) are roads, especially in city center - wavy, bumpy, holed ... terrible for driving, although traffic runs quite smoothly. Most of the roads in the center are one-way.
As for a small city Mukacheve is a cozy and beautiful place with good restaurants, cafes with tasty not expensive food (compared with Kyiv or European cities). There are a few churches, temples with sophisticated architecture and the castle of course is "must-to-visit". So I recommend this city to visit.
Mine was a "in memoriam" trip, all of my family came from pre-war Mukachevo. Irshava and surroundings. I had only two and a half days to visit which allowed barely to see family related sites that I was told about by parents and those very few of family that survived the horrors of the camps. The town itself was larger that I expected, quaint, pleasant to walk around in, easy to get around and the people especially the older folk whom on occasion I stopped for directions or information I found very interesting to talk with and they gave me a good current and historical perspective. Traveling the surrounding area use Taxi's they are very nice and helpful, do not drive yourself, most roads outside of town are terrible I needed more time to do the "Turisty" things, I suspect I will be back
There is some interesting history in this region but you should be a seasoned traveler, experienced with moving about in FSU countries outside the capital cities. The most difficulty we had was with the taxi drivers: rates are not transparent and they seem to not know the area. Perhaps it's better to pay the extra and let the hotel organize.
Wonderful little town with a lot of atmosphere and very little tourism. The castle is gorgeous (but go there early, to avoid organised tourist groups) and there is a wonderful and peaceful monastery along the river.
Local restourants and historical places were great. The best thing is to drink vine just in front of the city hall in the cinema cafe. You can visit Mukachevo and Chinadievo castles and Shenborn palace. Thermal lakes in Kosyno are really great.
Clean, cozy, big rooms. Location is not far from center, on the river side.
