Love the NC mountains, and Ashe County is by far our favorite place to go! Small town, but with some great restaurants and shopping - especially antiques. Farmer's Market on Saturday's is awesome, too! Locals are very friendly, and it's easy to navigate all throughout the county. Beautiful scenery, especially the Christmas Tree farms! Within just a mile or so of the Blue Ridge Parkway! Some "must see's/must do's" are: [West Jefferson] Ashe County Cheese Factory and Factory Store; Rose Mountain Butcher Shoppe (Ann Rose, proprietor) - specializes in "clean, pure, all natural meats & produce"; Havana Café (Cuban food); and take a 20-minute drive up NC Hwy. 16 North to Crumpler, NC - you have to experience Shatley Springs Restaurant & Shops! Serving delicious, old fashioned, down-home country cooking in an all-u-can-eat, "family-style" dining in an old farmhouse -type setting. Fried chicken, country ham, vegetables of every kind - all prepared just the way Grandma used to do it back on the farm! They serve a different menu for breakfast. If you're going for supper, be sure to call ahead for reservations...wait time without them can be a couple of hours. Worth every minute of it! Oh, and take a clean, empty jug to bring home some fresh, ice cold, mountain spring water - free for the taking, right out of the spring! Just way too much more to list here!!!
