The Saint-Pierre district is considered the birthplace of Bordeaux. It was only natural that this ancient Gallo-Roman port, which later became a medieval city, should take the name of the patron saint of sailors and fishermen. In the 12th century, the port was filled in. The ramparts of the walled city fell in the 18th century, with the construction of the Place de la Bourse.
