History of Marmontova street goes back to the early 19th century when Split and the region of Dalmatia became a part of Napoleon’s empire, officially known as Les Provinces Illyriennes. The key name from the Napoleonic rule on the eastern shores of the Adriatic was the one of the general Auguste Frédéric Louis Viesse de Marmont (1774 – 1852). He was known for abundant number of reformist endeavors, in areas of health services and social care, education and urbanism. Split’s first contemporary street was named after Marshal Marmont, keeping the memory on the French rule forever. Besides the street itself, memory of the French rule is kept also on the very top of the Marjan hill, the Telegrin peak, named after French telegraph station that occupied the spot at the time. After demise of Napoleon’s army, Split became a part of the Austro-Hungarian empire once again. A touch of the monarchy can be noted in the Art Nouveau style of the architecture of the building where Marmonaut is located. Building was commissioned by merchant Josip Duplančić and built in 1906 by architect Eduard Žagar. The building is protected as a national cultural heritage sight.
