This "room" is beyond description. It's basically part of an old church (800 AD to the late 1600s) and your bed is located in one of the apses with a very high ceiling. It's all stone/rock and the room is exceptionally silent. On the second "floor"/mezzanine in the room there is a huge jacuzzi with a light show. There is also a terrace (which you reach by climbing out an old window-turned-door and with a fantastic view of the cathedral. The room is very clean and there is a small minibar. Breakfast is served in the main church building and is adequate. This room cannot be compared to anything we have ever seen and is perfect for romantically oriented couples! Since Matera is very hilly we asked for a ported to carry our luggage to and from the hotel from and to our taxi (we arrived by bus). The staff was very helpful.

We absolutely loved our stay at Vetera Matera. We had a very late arrival, around 11pm, and the staff were beyond accomodating. Our transfer shuttle met us at the packing garage and the communication was seemless. Giovanni was at reception upon check in, and was an absolute delight. Francesco was also very helpful, with wine and snacks ready when requested even at such a late arrvial time. Both were so proud of the hotel and the area, full of great tips and lots of history about the hotel and the area. Our room was amazing, we had a terrace which was so great to see the view late at night. The breakfast was lovely too, and we were sad we were only there for one night! Can not recommend this hotel enough. A great location to discover the town, with the friendliest of staff! (Fillipe who carried our bags up and down those stairs and drove us back to our car was amazing as well).

The room was very tranquil & stylish. Well designed and thought-out (USB ports next to the beds etc). Excellent view from our terrace to the hillside opposite, it was magic at night time. We left our car at Welcome Matera parking for 2 nights (pre - book online). It was a short walk from there. Everything was perfect.

Located right in the heart of the old town, this is an ideal place from which to explore the Sasso. Guiseppe was highly responsive on WhatsApp and provided clear instructions in perfect English. His wife, Adriana, helped us to check in and from then everything was smooth. Guiseppe also went out of his way to help us to organise a tour of the Sasso on the day of our arrival. We had three rooms at Dimore dei Mercanti, each with access to a balcony to have breakfast or to sit out in the evening, with good bathrooms and amenities such as air conditioning, a coffee machine and fridges, as well as fruit, bread and spreads for a DIY breakfast.

Despite our lack of Italian, Mirella and Anna were very welcoming and made sure we saw as much as possible in our time in Matera.
