Topped out in 1520, this house of worship is Germany’s oldest surviving Gothic cathedral. It’s beautifully situated by the River Elbe, with twin spires towering 100 metres over the city. The interior is just as iconic, with a treasure trove of sculptures on display: from the 13th-century Five Wise Virgins to the haunting Magdeburger Ehrenma, a WWI memorial by expressionist Ernst Barlach.
